I couldn't agree more. Linux and open source in general should give more of a reason than "it does everything windows does, just better". Apple, whether you like them or not, understands that you have to redefine the computing experience to create a niche for yourself.
This is one corporation that needs a smack down. They might have every legal right, but no moral right to do this. How a youtube/digg/slashdot campaign to make the idiots thing this one through?
Nearly 20% of the market does NOT use IE. These are commercial sites that expect to generate revenue from their site. Why do they think it makes good business sense to exclude 1/5 visitors?
Spot on with this comment! I'm not sure if a bachelor's is what they want, but if the OP teaches:) while getting his doctorate, I think he can make the big bucks when he's done. In particular, they want people who can develop trading sophisticated algorithms. As an aside, I think its stupid. In effect, they want to predict the future and you just can't. But as long as they think it can be done, the money will be there. He just better hurry.
I was in my late 20's back in the late 80's and I got my first computer to help with my job in the securities business as a mutual fund salesman. After 2 years, I decided that I liked computers more than securities (actually the people pissed me of too). I've since learned 4 programming languages, am quite proficient with Macs (preferred), Windoze and over last few years, have become moe comfortable with Linux. I have a 6 year old son who uses the computer also and he got started with simple things around 2 years old such as Kid Pix. He's now up to Zoo Tycoon nd can help his mother with a few things on the computer. What's the best way to get them started? I'm not sure, but if you are patient with them and encourage them, they will find there way.
The article says TW lawyers don't think there would be any roadblock, but it seems to me a company that's been legally declared a monopoly in one industry should not be allowed to hold a monopoly in another. But I'm funny that way.
Agreed, the Gartner group is more lucky than good when they get it right. Remember when they said OS2 was to be the OS of choice for corporations? I think that was '92ish
Whatever this does to the PC industry, it will certainly drive up the price of PC's. With MS putting the iron glove around the hardware, low cost computers will be a thing of the past.
When you want to talk to someone, always press 0 or hold on, never choose one of the prompts. For many CS departments, the phone prompt is just a way to gather statistical/marketing info about why people are calling. You often end up talking to the same people no what prompt you choose and anyone can setup/cancel accounts
I also used them get my SDSL (Telocity) here in Skokie, Il (just NW of Chicago) In the six months I've had them, there has only been one outage, but it lasted a full day. The setup was pretty quick, only 3-4 weeks and the performance has been good although I've questioned them about my download speed which does not seem to be what I pay for( 128 instead of 512). They also provide a static IP and don't bitch about my web server. All in all, they're good enough for me to stay, especially with all the horror stories out there.
Almost the same for me, except although they (DePaul) strongly encouraged VC++, it was not required. Wha I found odd was that almost nobody in the class had ever used anything else except another guy and myself. We both were using COdeWarrior. He used it for Palm dev, while I use it because it allows me to take projects across Win/Mac. I think you're right, people are gettting into programming for the money, which is bad for development in the long wrong.
In Apple's ~20 year history, they have only lost money a couple of those years, big loses yes, but more than made up by the profits they've enjoyed the last three years. If you want to rant about Apple or anyone else for that matter, thats fine, just do a little research first, or consider your target audience.
Lighten up, Windows is as proprietary and horrible as any other OS out there. Also, if your happiness is limited because of Apple and Linux, you will probably go postal when they bust up M$.
I celebrate XMas, but I don't believe Jesus was born on 12/25

Linux has a smaller market share than Mac OSX, but it has its share of vulnerabilities anyway

The article had some credibility before it got to her. Ownership of a PSP and having your name slapped on a game does not make you a geek.
Corporations globalizing, commercials eveywhere, elevators, bathrooms. The truth really is stranger than fiction.

And if Cyrllic counts there is a whole region in Europe of "Greek" names.
