  1. Re:local candidates on Getting Accurate Political Information? · · Score: 1

I just came across http://www.vgt2004.org/ via my local newspaper.

According to the server error page it is a Voter Guide Toolkit. It's intended purpose seems to be for newspapers to create a guide on candidates appearing on local ballots. Adoption of the site is spotty at best, with guides availible for 13 states (with some having multiple guides). Even if there is a guide for your state, it may be of little use. Of the two guides for Michigan, one only lists candidates for the House, and Presidentential races (at least for my district), and the other doesn't have any candidates at all. Though I did find that a page for Florida that lists candidates for Sheriff, County Commission, and School Board.

For the two House candidates listed for my district, it give various information, including campaign website, education, experience, community involvement, endorsements, military records and answers from the candidate to a number of questions. Unfortunately it doesn't give voting records, or campaign finance information. This appears to be the standard information for all voter guides. So if you are lucky enough to have a paper that has created a voter guide, the guide probably won't give any more information than the candidate is disclosing in the first place.

When you get some of the better weapons it's almost impossible to dodge some attacks, just because the ships are so big. On top of this, you have to catch the ships so that they are oriented properly (as they spin and fall when "destroyed"), otherwise they will fire in some useless direction (anything more than 30 degrees on either side of your direction of travel). The end result is you end up getting a lot of weapons that are of no help, and losing them right away since there is not enough room to maneuver. Personally I'd suggest making things a little smaller, and have fewer ships firing all over the place at the start of the game, giving you a chance to work on your skills. Catching ships in the correct orientation would become less of a nuisance then.

Hopefully after the slurry of Star Wars episode III games that come out, LucasArts will realize that there aren't anymore games that they can give a face lift, and slap the Star Wars name on, then out of desperation will give us Sam & Max. In reality, they'll probably just release Mercenaries 2.

I third this, and also recomend insound.com (too lazy to link, but not too lazy to type this), which has a lot of overlap with epitonic, but some stuff that's not there. Plus if you like the music, you can buy the stuff through them. Though make sure to sign up for the newsletter as they send coupons codes out. I just got 15% off of an entire order last week.

You're sure those weren't from the now defunct infinite machine who were recently working on a new Sam & Max title?

And Tim Shafer is now heading up his own game company, Double Fine Productions, which is working on the impressive Psychonauts, which is sadly only scheduled to be released for X-Box.

And did Shafer really work all that much on Sam & Max? For some reason I think his involvement was minimal (though I can't verify this). And as long as Purcell is involved, it should be great!

I think this is actually a great idea. If we could get a large representation of the tech industry to march on D.C., threatening to strike, it should scare the government with thoughts of a possible economic downturn when the tech industry no longer has enough of a workforce to support the rest of the nation's industries if this bill should pass. Heck, maybe some politicians would actually listen to our arguments and do the right thing for the right reasons.

  11. What good fantasy movies are there? on Do-It-Yourself "Dungeons and Dragons" Film Review · · Score: 1

Here's some that I think are good, but most of them are influenced by nostalgia. I'm skipping anything in the "sci-fi" or anime realm of fantasy. And I realize my picks aren't big on action.

    • The Never Ending Story (the original, not the sequal)
    • Willow
    • Princess Bride
    • Labyrinth
    • Dark Crystal

Anyone know some good fantasy movies I missed? Ones that have a little more action? Anyone know why fantasy movies always flop, yet everyone you know has seen and loves them? Think D&D will do this?

And though I haven't bothered to see it, it sounds like they could have made a better movie had they just gotten some role players together, wrote down everything they said, than turned it into a movie.

But in all seriousness, maybe something like this would work. Patent something increadibly stupid that everyone uses, and the courts would defend under current copyright law. Then create such a big fuss about it that more people begin to relize how screwed up the copyright law is.

And I'm still waiting for Ogg to encode my 44.1kHz, 16 bit stereo WAV files.

This is my first major election, and I'm wondering why in Florida the Absentee Ballots haven't been counted yet? Does this mean the absentee ballot's in other states haven't been counted yet? Is everything just media speculation at this point, and no numbers have been confirmed yet? This could be very important for Nader since he has not received the 5% of the votes he needs. Since many college students voted for Nader, and many college students voted by absentee ballot.
