  1. OpenSolaris 2008.11 runs beautifully on my 701 on Which Distro For an Eee PC? · · Score: 1

Everything works out of the box except the webcam and the wired ethernet - for which there's a 3rd party driver (google "atge"). Excellent suspend/resume support, audio, compiz, etc. and I get to use ZFS on the 4g ssd as well as an 8gb SD card.

I wouldn't want to run anything else, having tried xandros & Eeebuntu.

disclaimer: I work at Sun. ( so, using OpenSolaris as my main OS in my day jobs, means I naturally am more comfortable with it on my netbook )

  2. Killer app on Mobile Phone Projectors "Will Launch This Year" · · Score: 2, Funny

I'd love one of these, if only so I could send captured plans to allies in the memory systems of one of these cell-phone units, along with an appropriate video message. You know, along the lines of:

"General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person..." etc.

  3. ZFS automatic backups on Apple's "Time Machine" Now For Linux... Sort Of · · Score: 1

I've got something like this for Solaris/OpenSolaris users at:

(pretty screenshots on the blog post for the previous version

-- plug a USB disk into your ZFS-based OpenSolaris box, and any filesystems you marked as being interesting enough for backups will get sent to the USB disk. If previous snapshot streams are already on the USB disk, then we do an incremental backup. GUI notification via notify-send(1) Works for me!

This still work, specifically there's no restore GUI right now, and the configuration is a bit clunky, but still...

They've already got a GPS built in.

  5. Re:Great OS, but it won't replace Linux on Sun's Linux Killer Examined · · Score: 1

What version of Solaris were you using ? -h flags work fine for me on Solaris 10 (think that was the case with s9 as well)

(btw. if you think command line flags are what makes an OS great, then I think you're missing something...)

  6. Re:Just like SMF on Does launchd Beat cron? · · Score: 1

Replying to myself (how sad?) - the system restarter stuff sounds like the new process contracts stuff in Solaris. man ctrun on a Solaris 10 box.

  7. Just like SMF on Does launchd Beat cron? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Nice to see Apple take a page out of Sun's book...

  8. Sun Cheaper than Dell anyway on Sun Posts Increasing Loss · · Score: 1
People have this impression that Sun's servers are always more expensive.

They're not - right now, the entry level v60x and v65x are cheaper than equivalent servers from Dell.

    Quote from :
    http://www.sun.com/lowcost/feature/v60-v65.html

"The Sun Fire V60x and V65x servers run the Solaris x86 Operating System or Standard Linux for powerhouse performance, choice, and flexibility--starting at $2,450. Prices for the new systems are better than those of comparable competitors - for example, $2650 for a standard Sun Fire V65x versus $2691 for an equivalent Dell 2650. The Sun outperforms the Dell on standard benchmarks and comes with web services and application software that costs extra on the Dell."
