  1. This whole Napster thing is a bunch of BS on Napster Cuts Deal With BMG · · Score: 1

I don't understand how these morons can't find a middle ground. The music industry idiots should know better. They need to realize that Napster is not something you can stop by flipping a switch. The revolution has begun, and it's being followed. They'll cause more damage if they stop it.
WHat they should do is start kissing Napster's ass and beg them for a chunk of the advertising banner programs' money that Napster should start. Just like NetZero. It's still free, but you have to put up with banners. Everybody wins!
I would have never thought that this case would go this far...

Hey, I like that!! A lot! In fact, I think I'll go out and buy one as soon as they come out. It reminds me of my old c64. Gotta have it.

Taco, post news from now on. People could care less about your opinion.

  3. Disc'd on Disconnected · · Score: 1

I think the reason geeks are 'disconnected' is because they're much more preocupied with other stuff, like the program they started at home, or the book they're reading, or how the hell does a PAUSE frame work on a full-duplex network?
The information technology field has more than enough information to keep one busy for a lifetime, and geeks who develop that uncontrollable thirst for knowledge try to gain as much as possible without waisting time.
So why go to the company picnic and waste 10 minutes reading newsletters when you could read man pages, books and write code instead?
That's the reason I'm disconnected. And I think I speak for quite a few people. It's not something bad. In fact, developing this interest in computers and everything related to them is the best thing that's ever happened to me...

    You're not making any sense...
It sounds to me like you're one of them programmers who went to school just to have a well-paying job. Let me ask you this: Do you have an Ethernet network in your house hooked up to the internet via DSL? Do you spend hours late at night reading source code to figure out how the heck a program works? Do you end up spending money on gizmos you dont really need just to take them apart and see how they work? Do you get a rush out of something you achieve and know it hasn't been done before? That's what hackers are all about. i believe that /. targets geeks and hackers mostly. If your dream is to develop enterprise web software on a Microsoft IIS/NT system, this is not the place for you.
Again, no hard feelings, but I think your frustration comes from not fitting in.

I'm sorry, but Perl, Javascript, PHP and SQL might be enough for you, to make web pages driven by an Apache server on a *nix machine, but your friends will be developing true software really soon. Stuff that you will probably never be able to do, because you're lacking that strong foundation that college offers.
Besides, your friends will probably catch the languages that you know in less than 2 months. That's what college is all about: it teaches you how to learn.

BTW, I learned Perl, Javascript, PHP, PgSQL, HTML, and most of the Linux OS in 3 months, with no college.

  8. College is a good thing on Techies Saying No To College · · Score: 1

I never went to college, although I have a good IT job. I learned everything I know from reading and reading...
However, experience at my job only betters me in a small part of the computer world. That's why I decided to persue college. Not because I want a better job, but because I feel a thirst for knowledge for everything related to computers. I'll probably persue a MS, or even a Ph.D
So I think college is good only if you feel a deep need for the knowledge that it offers.
And remember, college is just the starting point. It's like a 2-dimensional array: It shows you what is at positions [0][0], [1][0], [2][0], etc and it's up to you to explore the depths of that array on your own.

On the other hand, Carmack proves that you do NOT have to go to college to be a wizard.

  9. Number of apps on How Many Applications Depend On Windows? · · Score: 1

I don't think that they mean 'programs' when they say 'applications'. I've written 10 programs in the past 2 weeks, (small network programs) but I don't think that those count. As far as I'm concerned, I've yet to write an application.
When I think app, I think StarOffice and Quake 3, anything that involves over 100,000 lines of code.
    My 2 cents.

I don't know why everybody says it won't take over mp3... It's simply better. Most people I know have been waiting for a better music format for a while now. And most of the mp3 freaks are the geeks, who are going to jump on it the second it comes out. I know I will.
It's like comparing magnetic tape to CD. It'll maybe take a little bit for everyone to convert, but it will happen.
    So I say: "Bye bye, mp3!" :')

  12. What about Gnapster? on Implications For Software Like Napster And Gnutella? · · Score: 1

My biggest question is 'Will the Linux/open source Napster clones be affected by the court ruling?'
For example, Gnapster gives you the option to either use the official Napster server or other mp3 servers. Are those servers dependant on Napster's upness, or will it be more of a judgement call whether to shut them down or not whn it comes down to it?

  13. The Feds... on Emergency Hearing About Carnivore - Updated · · Score: 2

THe FBI's been known to put the law aside when it comes to catching criminals. The big problem is that the law is the only protection for the innocent bunch.
By strong opinion is that they should stay out of it, and do their thing through different means. Everybody knows that they bug houses, scan phone conversations and sniff networks as it is. People kind of know that, but they assume that "it's never them," and that sort of thing doesn't happen where they live...
    Well, guess what, it does.
What boggles my mind is that with Carnivore, they're bringing all their chicaneries upfront for everybody to see, hoping that they cann enstill a sense of trust by being 'honest.' I'm curious to see how this thing works, and I wonder who the "group of experts" that will examine the software are.

Be cautious! This could be the beginning of a privacy-free era. With more an more people moving to computers and the Internet, the Carnivore and its followers will provide an unbeatable communism-inspired way to control the crowds into a system that which will be the handiest tool to turn the country communist.

The carnivore must be filed away and forgotten about!
