  1. Re:Expands Gaming Rather than Controls it on Microsoft's Real Plan For XNA Gaming Domination? · · Score: 1

I think MS traditionally call it the "embrace and extend" strategy. That's what they tried with Java back in the day.

  2. Welcome to economics on Artists Protesting Single-Song Downloads · · Score: 1

There have been a number of postings about fillers on CDs here already.

Maybe some artists and their audience have a very different opinion about a mandatory sequence on an album.

I still prefer to mix my own music I can listen to in the car or doing sports.

Somehow I feel Ms. "what the f*** you think you're doing" prefers people not being creative themselves.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out when some of the artists will decline to sell single songs from their albums while others allow it.

Buyers will be able to express in money what they think of the album as work of art. Maybe, they will turn towards artists who care more about their audience than about their wallet.

With the ability to preview songs, maybe it will become easier for newcomers to sell their music. I guess they wouldn't mind me buying a single song I like.

  3. Re:Switch? on Apple To Discuss HyperTransport For Future Macs · · Score: 2, Interesting

Somehow I have been on the brink of switching (gee Apples' ad campaign was too successfull I guess) for more than a decade.
The first computer I ever owned was a C64 (yes, I'm that old).
When the first MacIntosh was out, I wanted one. Being a teenager and being broke, I ended up with an Atari ST instead.

Being a student, I was equally broke and happy to replace the ST with old PC boxes I did inherit from their previous users (usually my dad), going 386, 486, P133, P200. Each machine I got was at least 2 years behind current models (the P200 lasted me until the P III broke the GHz barrier).

For the sake of raw 3D games power without the price (remember the old Atari quote here?), my next machine was a PC again. I had forgotten Macs over the years.

Later I started using Macs at work (next to PCs), just shortly before OS X came out. Then I started again wanting a Mac, and loving OS X running on the Mac at work I am using, I'm quite sure that my next machine will be a Mac.

The only thing that I would miss are games. You get games for the Mac, but sure not the boatload you have for a PC. Although a Gamecube and an Xbox are in place to fill that gap now.

Is the "IBM would have to change their 970 chip" quote from the article evidence that 970 based Macs are knocking on our doors yet?

15 years later, I can almomst see the Mac sitting on my desk soon.

  4. Profit margins of games? on PSP Pricing, Competitiveness Analyzed · · Score: 1, Interesting

Most GBA games are around 40 Euro, GC/Xbox/PS2 games around 55 Euro. True, in addition GBA games come on a cartridge which has a higher production cost than a DVD.

On the other hand, with the amount of SNES games re-released for the GBA and possibly less content creation (no huge 3D worlds, music scores etc.) for handheld games, the margin should be fairly healthy.
And as it is with Nintendo ruling the handheld market, it must be like printing money for them right now.

So the incentive for Sony to get a share of this market should be sufficiently high. Are they trying to dampen analysts' expectations because they expect Nintendo to be a harder fight this time than they were with the PS1 vs. N64?

  5. Ahh, sweet memories on Intellivision 25-In-1 TV Game Debuts · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a once pround owner of an Intellivision back in better times, I remember thinking 'why did I not get a Atari 2600 like anybody else' after a while.
Everybody said it had an edge over the Atari on the tech side. Still, nobody else bought it. I loved the system, but had to envy those VCS 2600 cart swapping folks at school.
Years later, this reminds me of things like VHS and Video 2000 VCR systems here in Europe.

Besides, nothing could beat Sub Hunt in my book back then.

    May the better one win...

  6. N-Gage vs. Communicator quality? on Nokia Slams GameBoy, Discusses N-Gage · · Score: 1

If the product quality of the N-Gage is anywhere as poor as that of the 9110i Communicators I see Nokias' handheld gaming history being a short one.

The Communicator is a nice concept, but horribly implemented.
I've seen plenty of 9110i and all had the same problems. Apps crashing, caller lists getting nuked, phone crashing. Best one always was when the diplay looked like normal, but the phone actually crashed internally.
Hmmm, strange no one called today...

One had to reboot that thing once a day at times. To do so, you removed the battery.

So I wonder if the remove-battery-to-change-game concept is a neato feature to prevent phone crashes through preventive rebooting.

If the N-Gage is the same, I'll stick with my GBA SP.
As I'm in my thirties, I guess I am not in the target group anyway.

On the other hand, the Communicator was the only tech device I ever owned which would prompt a woman (you know, humans of that other gender) to chat me up when she saw it...
