The reason people think of it as becoming a monopoly is not because they are making horizontal acquisitions, but rather strategic ones. In computers, you can acquire a monopoly by simply dealing in too many areas. This is the reason Microsoft is one of the first companies involved in horizontal acquistions that has gotten in trouble. They were right to say computers would change the world. They didn't know it would modify the legal world as well.

RedHat+Cygnus = A company with control over a popular environment for development (read:mindshare)
Microsoft+VB,VC++,VJ++,COOL etc = A company with control over several key languages. People see this as what RedHat is trying to do. I find the Linux market to be something that naturally prevents this from happening. But, that said, it could stil happen.

Luckily a lot of what is in RedHat Linux is not developed by them. Otherwise there would be a case against them.

When you argue with them about their terms, they simply tell you that "it's in the child's best interest and if you refuse, we'll have to assume you are against your child's best interest, and by the way, have you ever had to deal with Child/Youth services, and ya'know they can take your kids away.*"

The borg aren't evil, they are cold and logical with a natural drive to achieve perfection. Can't argue with that. Jem'hadar are the way they are due to nature. The shadows also weren't evil, just driven by other motivations (chaos/evolution through opposition) rather than that of a "hero"

And that is how it should be. People become too mired in tradition to see the true aspects of their religions. Religious institutionalism breeds ignorance and apathy. Rather unfortunate, that, the way it gets all buggered up by ritual and sacrament. For the sake of your maker, all you need to do is believe.

Windows has OpenGL too, and has had it for years. The problem is the second thing you mentioned. the "non standard" technique of DirectX. Unfortunately (and much to my disappointment) DirectX is the De Facto standard for game development these days. You can't go into Comp-USA and find any games just written for DOS with a company's own library set. DirectX and Direct3D (which is what I think you meant to say) are easy to code for abstractions that make life easier for developers to develop their games. I'm not saying this is a good thing (I know quite a few games that kick modern FPS games in quality -- like ultima 7) but it is definitely the thing du jour.
