  1. Why nobody speaks about ICQ ? on AOL/gaim/Jabber Situation Explained · · Score: 1

Why nobody speaks about ICQ ?

    • It was the pioneer of IM
    • It has a very big user base. More than 100 million registered users.
    • It has many features. File transfer. Chat. Conference. Url transfer. Voice messages. A good user search interface.
    • Many OpenSource clients. Licq, KXicq, gnomeicu (see The Linux ICQ Page)
    • The Protocol has not been published, but it is well understood (see The ICQ Protocol Site)
    • As far as I know, has never blocked OpenSource clients.

Why so much talk about AIM, MSM and YM ?

  2. Why so many people is "unethical" on MPAA Goes After Gnutella · · Score: 1

Have anybody thought why so many people act illegally and unethically ? Did their mother teach them how to behave in life ?

Most people that share copyrighted material are perfect normal citizens in everydays life. So? Why do they do this?

People common sense says it is wrong to kill or to steal. Most criminals also realize that thier behaviour is not good. But why common sense fails when talking about sharing copyright material? I think copyright law is an "artificial" law.

If you have a chair, and I build a copy of your chair, I feel I have the right to do it and to use the chair. No "copy protection" law can stop me.

What musicians should do? I think they should do what all musicians have done before the recording industry appears, play live presentations. From Mozart and Beethoven to street performers, all them got money from their shows.

Probably they wont get rich doing this, but neither do doctors, policemen, or most people in the world.

Copyright law is like "alcohol prohibition law" in 1920s. An unpopular law that will disappear.

  4. Shipping with aim.exe file on AOL vs. Open Source AIM Clones · · Score: 1

Why it is illegal to ship aim.exe ?

IANAL, but I think if it is legal to create and use an AIM clone, then if the only way to do this is by shipping a copy of aim.exe file for chechsums purposes, then this should also be legal. We can argue "fair use" and "interoperatibility" arguments.

Else almost any network enable app can use this scheme to monopolize the market. (Napster, ICQ, MS-IIS, MS-IExplorer, MS-Exchange)

Any argument against this logic ?

  5. A Solution on AOL vs. Open Source AIM Clones · · Score: 1

    Here is a solution.

    • Modify libfaim to compute the md5sum using an external copy of aim.exe .
    • Then modify GAIM and add a setup option to save a path to aim.exe file.
    • Then distribute libfaim and GAIM without aim.exe

That's all. The users are required to download a copy of AIM separately, but this is no problem. It's still free.

IANAL but I think that if embedding a copy of aim.exe is the only way to get interoperatively, then this solution perhaps it's legal. (Any lawyer in the audience?)

A better solution is to switch to an OpenSource IM standard

    From the General Public License:

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for this service if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things.

If I have a copy of a GPL software, I can sell it or give it away at no charge. But anyone that recieve a copy have the right to give it away at no charge if they want.

That usually means that GPL software is free (gratis) or have a very low price.

I wonder what would happen if some system utilities (Installer, configueartion tools, package manager), were propietary (not GPLed). Can I sell the CDs and restrict people from making copies ? Would this be legal ?

Wrong again, you CAN make direct system calls. A propietary software can make direct system calls to the Linux Kernel. Why do you want to do that ? It's much easy to use glibc.

The fact that I can't use the GNU regular expression library without GPLing my software is even more frustrating

You are right, You can only use this library from a GPLed program.

What is the point of a library you can't use because of licensing issues? How is that free?

The idea is that if you use free software for writting your code, then your code should be free. Else use a comercial Regexp library. Or write one yourself.

You have to understand that the idea is that software shuld be free. Like air. Like speech. If you don't like the idea use comercial software and OS and library. There you have no freedom at all.

  13. This numbers are tricky on Running The Numbers: Why Gnutella Can't Scale · · Score: 1

This numbers are tricky. They speak of a huge transmission size on a big net. What does it mean for a user ?

Using the default Gnutella parameters (Number of connections (N) = 4 and Time To Live (T) = 5) I can reach 484 (at most) users on the net. Using the same thinking I can say that 484 user can reach me.

How many queries does an average User does per hour ? When we do a query we have to wait a little time for the replies, the we begin to transmit (The tansmition does not affect the Net). So let's say that an average user do 20 queries per hour.(This is an overestimation)

So if 484 users do 20 queries of 83 bytes per hour, i have to recieve 803440 bytes per hour. That's 223 bytes per second.

We also have to add our outgoing traffic and replies. But the number will surely be less than 1KByte per second.

We can add 100 Millon users to the net and the behaviour will be exactly the same. But we can only search 484 machines.

If we increase N and T. Lets say N = 5 and T = 7, we can reach 27305 machines. If we all do 20 queries per hour I will recieve 45MBytes per hour. That's 12KBytes/sec. That's a bit higher, but many people can handle it.

It is possible to create more intelligent Gnutella clients, who cache content (some clients already do it), or cache query replies, or try to connect to near (geographicaly) machines.

My conclussion is that Gnutella Net can grow, but the number of machines we can reach is limited by the bandwith of the connections.

That mean, we can add more machines, but we can not reach more content without more average bandwith, or more "Intelligent" clients.
