back in '68, I was making simple circuits from Dad's Popular Electronics. This was before breadboards so yeah, I had a soldering iron in my little fist. By the time I was 12/13 I was fixing TVs in the neighborhood (pull all the tubes, ride my bike to Thrifty, test them, buy what was needed, ride bike home, replace tubes, present receipts and get money).
The little snotnoses were in their 20s when the smartphone came out, and I don't know what the policy is on the grand-snots.
Not to be pedantic, but the FM circuitry is actually built into the baseband chip. This is the chip that has 2-3 ARM cores, CDMA bit twiddling, graphics, and in fact is about 80% of the phone's capabilities. The ones I worked on had a baseband chip, a PMIC (power management IC), and a chip to handle the RF signals.
Now that I think about it, the circuitry probably has to be in both the baseband and the RF chip.
I want to pick my fruits/veggies/meat. Other than that I'm ok with it. Face it, Hunts tomato sauce is the same everywhere you go.
That said, fruits/veggies/meat are over 50% of my weekly food budget. Grocery shopping is maybe 20 minutes out of a 90 minute loop I do once a week, so I'm not saving much time going online.
Know what would help? 10 minute delivery. Put a pot roast on the crockpot this morning, found out I was out of tomato paste. Dafuk, I'm never out of tomato paste. So I skipped it. Would have been better with it, but I figured by the time I got home adding tomato paste would be a waste.
Same here, haven't flown since I was given the choice of being sexually molested or having naked pictures taken of me.
I enjoy driving, so now I spend a couple days driving to my destination. I pick the wife up at the airport, we do our thing, take her back to a different airport, she flys home and I drive.
My doc is starting to bug me about getting a colonoscopy. My wife did that a few years ago. The enemas/spending the night on the toilet is bad enough, but the thought of some dude (and a nurse, and some random tech, the secretary who needs a signature, the electrician adding an outlet, the Culligan guy replacing the water tank, and the gay guy with his phone out that just happens to be there cuz reasons) getting me doggy style while they run a camera from asshole to nostrils is just something I don't wanna do.
That said, my dad got polyps in his intestines all the time. Those ass cameras saved his life more than once. Somehow the thought of the guy who founded 3 churches and was asst pastor at one, on his hands and knees, with whatever tech they had in the 70s-90s, doesn't give me mental images I want to print on a 3D printer.
Lemme buy a $40 Guitar Hero kinda thing with some hardware and an app, tell me what to do, and mail it in. Long as you don't have forums named "Wow! Look at how bad that enema worked" and "Dang, that is the biggest ass cancer I've ever seen".
2 years ago my neighbor went batshit crazy, pounding on my door, claiming I was peeking in her bedroom window at 3 AM, claiming I walked into her living room and kissed her, claiming I walked into her unit, into the bedroom, and went through her closet, etc etc etc. She called the cops on me several times claiming all sorts of crap, including I threw a bowl of piss on her, then finally filed a restraining order against me. Not being stupid, I hired a lawyer. Cost me $1500. Spent maybe 3 hours with the guy, 2 of which were repeating my story 3 times (never mind I'd documented everything and given him the printout), 1 was actually in court.
She claimed I was doing this for some 9 months, yet the sheriff had no record of her ever calling them until she started harassing me. First time they came out I told my story, and one of them said "oh, that's were she went". Hmmm. Finally, she brought a witness into court. Witness 100% contradicted her story.
The real pisser? I asked the judge for legal expenses. He gave me half. Even though it was 100% clear to everyone in the courtroom she was 100% full of shit, he only gave me 50% ($750). Why? "I don't want women to feel like they'll be harassed when they ask for a restraining order". Asshole. He also didn't do that thing where she has to pay me. She moved, I don't know were. So she owes me $750 (in my mind $1500), I don't know where she is or how to contact her, and she's not paying. I have no recourse in the courts.
The kicker? She was a registered nurse and google showed her prior address, maybe 1/4 mile from me. Went over there, she'd done the same thing at that place. Explains the deputy's "oh, that's where she went" comment.
Do I need to say that absolutely nothing she claimed I did was true? Yeah, I though so. I was 100% the victim here, I did nothing to her.
I hit the reddit/funny daily, I also use imagezoom, so that when my mouse hovers over a thumbnail I get the whole pic. Yesterday about a third of the images did not zoom, Today it was 100%. Sucks to read reddit when I have to click on each link
It's been maybe 4 years now since I've put Linux on a machine. Does audio, specifically mp3, just work out of the box?
I'm good at Unix, using it since '82 or so, was a sysadmin for Sun systems for maybe 3 years in the early 90s, used Linux since '94, have written Linux device drivers, yadda yadda yadda. It always pissed me off I had to jump through so many hoops just to get audio to work.
The way it got me was it popped up the "pssst. wanna update to Win10?" when the signal from my brain to click was travelling to my finger. It started updating before I figured out what happened.
I want my Win8 back, Win10 has nothing major wrong with it, just a bunch of minor things that add up to a real PITA. Updating/rebooting when my laptop is closed is at the top of the list, pisses me off everytime I open the laptop in the morning and find out all my programs are closed.
Seems to me it's easier to build a nice tall wall to block the wind and collect the moisture than it is a mountain. The wind and water won't know. Maybe even put some drainage ditches at the base of the wall to catch the rain. Hell, make the wall some 5-10 meters thick and fill it with apartments, retail, and office space.
Yes. I use Thunderbird at home and have used it for many years. It works, i.e., it allows me to send and receive e-mail, and doesn't seem to be terribly buggy. What more do you need?
Same here. Switched from Eudora to Thunderbird over a decade ago and have had very few problems with it. I use it to access 2 gmail accounts, I like having all my email on my local machine and I think gmail's idea of tagging vs folders is brain dead.
It's called savings. Some of us have them, some dumshits don't. It's also called adjusting quickly to changed circumstances, as in slashing the hell out of expenses when you see how things are going.
Going from Win8 to Win10 meant I needed to find out where Microsoft moved a bunch of stuff I used. Now they're moving it all around again.
I sure hope it's an easier search, but I'm kinda annoyed that I spend a month or two getting used to where Win10 stuffed commonly used things, now I get to spend who knows how much time figuring out where they should have put it in the first place.
Bought my HTC V One in July 2012 (birthday present to me). As of now, it's never gotten a single OS update that I know of. Haven't loaded any apps on it for 2 years because newer apps don't run, and older apps I was interested in got loaded 2+ years ago.
/ based on a sample size of 1, I'll never buy another HTC phone again // hardware sucks (power/volume buttons broke early and often) /// software is buggy as hell
Seriously, they spend billions on cracking systems, zero day exploits, breaking encryption, etc. Why doesn't Obummer just say the NSA has to let manufacturers know of the defects in their products?
Yeah yeah, I know. The NSA is all terrorists, and his new organization is all show no substance.
Not the usual kind of censorship, but that of the news not showing anything that might be upsetting. Have to wonder if minds would change if they showed pictures of a happy, active 5 year old, then a burned, twisted mass of stuff that was the kid's body after some asshole set off a bomb.
Dunno, an agency to defend national security or somesuch? I tend to be suspicious of the gub'mint "helping", but it seems an ANS (Agency for National Security) would be handy to have around.
How hard would it be to go to the nearest intersection and make sure you're on the right street, and double check the street address?
I think the (former) homeowners should get to stay in "not a big deal"'s house until new houses are built. "Not a big deal" can live in a tent on the construction site.
It's getting to be that time of year, April 1, where this site (and others) post really stupid crap because either A) someone thought it was funny; or B) someone thought they should think it funny even though it's not. Trust me, it's very seldom funny.
In the spirit of the Trump/Sanders campaigns can I ask that/. skip the annual "post a bunch of stupid stuff all day long".
I never buy games new, I wait a couple months then buy the game off craigslist for half price. Play it, then sell it for half what I paid.
10%? I can go to Game Stop and get really old games for that.
That said, there are some old games I play now. Talking about MW3 (MW2-MW3 was the peak of CoD, for whatever reason Ghost/BOPS{2|3}/Modern Warfare don't hold my interest), Civilization Revolution. Every couple months I pop GTA V in just to drive around and see what I can see.
Not buying it. The ones I've seen "leap ahead of the pack" have pretty balanced lives. They do their job, they don't spend half the day on FB, they don't stand around the water cooler yammering. They go to work, work, go home.
At home they have wives, girlfriends (sometimes both), kids. They've got other hobbies. One of the best engineers I've ever worked with had something like 9 kids (not exaggerating here, if his wife wasn't preggers he was trying to get her that way). He was also a huge conspiracy enthusiast. Face on Mars, Kennedy, MLK, you name it, he was an expert on it.
The guys who live and breath this stuff tend to be boring know it alls who, when push comes to shove, know everything but how to do their job.
In the mid-70's I went with my parents to the bay area to meet some friends of theirs. They decided we needed to eat at a restaurant that required a BART ride. Keep in mind, back then BART was brand spankin new, ultra-reliable, much cheaper than gas. We never made it to the restaurant. I was like 10 years old, I have no idea why, But as an old fart nowdays whenever I think of BART I think "not gonna happen".
On the other hand, that was the first time I saw Black Sabbath's Paranoid album. Didn't hear it, but Ed (son of parental unit's friends, some 3 years older than me) made sure I knew it was the best album out at that time.
How do I disable it at the browser level?

Lots more stolen phones, and phones smuggled from Mexico/Canada.
Seems to me that, while looking good on the surface, once you really start to think about it this is a bad idea.

Can I make a poll of this?
When I was in school the big worry was the upcoming ice age.
Like nutritional news (coffee is bad for you, no it's good, no it's bad, etc), I take all this crap with a huge grain of salt.
