  1. Re:Big day for Apple on Photoshop for OS X · · Score: 2, Informative

I pretty sure they'll sell quite some more OS X packages now. I know many people have been waiting to upgrade from 9.x and Photoshop has been the main reason.
Why would that be? OS X can run MacOS 9.x programs as well as MacOS 9.x - it just loads the classic inviroment like OS/2 loaded the windows 3.x program manager to run windows software. It's a bit slow to start but otherwise it works like a charm...

I'm surprised you didn't mention Verilog -- it's an HDL that is (outside of military contracting) much more popular than VHDL.
    [SNIP]
The reason for mentioning VHDL as opposed to Verlog is probably that he's a european HW designer. European designers use VHDL and everyone else uses Verilog.

BTW: I'm studying electrical engineering at Technical University of Denmark and I've never written a single line of Verilog - none of the professors teach it since it would be hard to get a job in europe.

If someone reports a hit, cant they just re-check that data?
You're missing the point with SETI. There is no such thing as "a hit" when analysing these massive amounts of data. Your computer will never give a message like: "Analysis detected a HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMTN, ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US from outer space". What your computer does is just an analysis and then the SETI-folks will do the real exciting stuff with the resulting data from your computers work.

The problem before SETI@Home was that the data wasn't analysed completely to detail because these analysis take a shitload of time so they just did a rough analysis, trying to find extreme peaks but no checking for patterns over longer periods of time.

  10. Big-time hoax for all you /.'ers out there on Firewall On A PCI card · · Score: 1

This must be a joke (but a good one). I must admire the amount of work that has been done. The time it must have taken to create the pdf-manual and the presentations in various bandwith-friendly-versions is almost as much as it would take to actually create this silly product.
What would be the reason to do such a product as a PCI-card? If it has it's own processor and runs linux, then it doesn't really use the rest of the pc for anything else but power. I might believe this product if it was a self-contained unit.
The catch-phrases "linux" and "transmeta" only tells me that this was made especially for all the /. people...I'm slightly flattered by the effort to fool us.

  11. Please tell me this is a hoax on The Open Windows Project · · Score: 1
This sounds outragous. If these people really posess the programming skill to make this work then I would hate to see it wasted on such a gigantic project that is destined to fail.

But I'm happy to see that it doesn't seem like the team behind all this have managed to produce a single line of code yet. The biggest news on the page seems to be the great progress of the website!

Personally I don't think that there even is a need for a free windows clone. How many of you guys pay for windows anyway? Like mp3 I'll pay for it if i feel it's worth the money.
