Interesting how he placed Google Adds on the site before letting it get slashdotted...maybe he even made a few bucks on this whole deal? Now he can buy that backup-system he's always wanted!
Wow, cool. A lawyer *and* someone that doesn't print the "this is not legal advice" disclaimer. Well, since everyone working in the CS industry have been fired, the slashdot-crowd apparently have all gone to law-school. The new common term, however is IANAD (I am not a dentist)...
I have a computer at campus and one at home. Besides that I have a laptop. When programming I always commit my source code to CVS - in that way I can just do an update from whatever machine I code from the next time. I don't just use CVS from Linux. When coding VHDL it's necessary to move the files to windows and do the synthesis there. Works like a charm.
Latex files are also easy to commit to CVS and even PDF files (don't forget to use the -kb parameters when adding!)
For mp3s I simply use Samba - of course it helps that my campus computer is connected to a 100mbit connection to my dorm but for streaming most bandwidths should do.
Well, you should've just bougth the Tungsten W in stead. It includes GSM/GPRS so you could use it anywhere. Then you could take your kids to Disneyworld and still read e-mails.
From the description: Whether you take it from room-to-room or set it up for the whole family to enjoy, the Satellite P25 Series will delight your senses with its 17" threatre like display, rich harman/kardon® sound and smooth NVIDIA® GeForce(TM) FX Go5200 graphics.
Så it's not really a laptop per say...but if your family is to damn lazy to go to the entertainment center, then the entertainment center will come to your family.
This is true. In MIPS assembly the nop and move -instructions are pseudocode. The nop is merely a sll $0, $0, 0 (shift reg0 left 0 times and store in reg0) and move is addu $target, $dest, $0 ($target = $dest + 0).
Also some load instructions are not possible and therefore must be replaces with 2-3 other instructions to actually do the desired operation.
The assembly produced by e.g. gcc is meant for hand-optimization and curiosity but the assembler will do optimizations and various translations.
without your electrical system and your engine spinning down you could lose power steering, power brakes, your lights would go out (at night at high speed most probably), various automatic transmission problems, etc.
Trust me, those problems have already been thought of - what if the battery in your car suddenly disconnects during driving? The power steering only assists in turning the wheels. Under the hood it's still mechanical. When learning to drive we covered this and I actually had to step out of the car and turn the wheel with force to see the steering wheel in the car turn. The key was not in the car.
The brakes are also only assisted. When all electronics fail in the car, the car will stop pretty fast since it now has to turn the off-engine.
As for the safety of the driver I really don't care much for his sorry ass...
Not to mention these people are directly supporting the spam industry and making it very lucrative. The victims so richy got what they deserved. Consider that their fine and tax for stupidity.
Yeah, just like lotteries are an extra-tax for people with poor math skills.
Kinda ironic to read the banner ads on/. today "Lord of the rings - the two towers...only in theaters" - right above the story about LOTR being available on the street. Would slashdot lie to me??
I saw almost the same error messages on a screen at Copenhagen airport a week ago...kinda scary actually but it makes me wonder if they are trying to replace their terminals with x-boxes? Sure would be a neat way to cut costs in a difficult industry at the moment.
I like the "under dichotomy" myself. It makes it much easier to roll the paper back on the roll when the cat has unrolled half a roll for fun...it's my girlfriends cat - I wanted a dog!

Have a look at the Half keyboard. There's a demo that only works on windows and mac:-( But I rebooted to windows to see the demo - looks pretty descent.
Actually it pretty much means that it IS impossible. The Archos plays mp3 with a Micronas IC that only decodes mpeg.
The main CPU probably isn't fast enough to even TRY to decode Ogg-files. It's like reprogramming your palmpilot to play DVD-files...it was never meant to be! The Archos cpu only controls the keyboard and the playlists.
Hmmm...so alot of computers with Klez will have their bios flashed on august 2nd. To me, that's almost a good thing.
It will hurt many people, yes, but those are the people who don't bother to run antivirus software even though they use outlook. They will learn a tough lesson.
I know I'm cruel, but I'm quite tired of hearing the phrase: "I think I have some sort of virus on my computer but I'm not gonna do anything about it"...that same jerk is spreading the virus every second he's online.
Why the heck isnt this on the frontpage? Mozilla *needs* testers especially right now and were stuck in the developer section??
Yup, I just submitted the news in the unlikely event that every/. reader missed it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Maybe the/. team will act differently next time when they now have to sit and reject several hundred submissions...

The number of people that have said "Imagine a Beowulf Cluster of these!" has been said is so large that it approaches infinity.
A quick google-search for "Imagine a beowolf cluster of these" returns 186 results...

Yeah, that worked so well for KIllustrator...
With enviroment it's always easy to look at the expenses but what about the benefits of microprocessors on the enviroment?
Think of waste-plants being monitored by computers so the waste is constantly being processed ideally.
But it's an interesting set of numbers, though.
Hehe - I remember seeing something like:
