There are twolevels:
1. Xlib - most basic code that handles simple operations like line drawing etc.. Every X app has to use this ( it might be hidden by level 2 code but it is still there.)
2. Various toolkits build on top of Xlib (KDe, GNOME.) Most apps use some sort of toolkit.
Window Managers use portion of Xlib that was specifically designed to handle managing windows etc...
For one, Macs still have by far the easiest and most transparent GUI (though this could change for the worse with OS X -- though I'm keeping my mind open on that). No GUI currently comes close to the elegance of the Mac GUI in terms of how you can use it. For one thing, the Mac Clipboard, for example, works far more powerfully than any other comparable "clipboard" on any other OS that I have seen, given its ability to convert data on-the-fly, depending on what program you copied from and are pasting to (or, even better, are dragging and dropping from or to).

No. The reason is that there are millions of players using Windows and only small number using Linux. I run Linux, use it at work but for games nothing beats Windows. Period.

Hey, change you perspective. It is people with their money who create wealth not goverment. Goverment with its taxes is necessary evil that can be tolerated in very few specific cases which are more suited for this type of managmend ( military etc..)
Everything else is a matter of people.
What's wrong with Big Corporations ? They'r the ones who feed milions of people by providing work.
No fucking social program, or anything else created by goverment or any other body ever came close to that accomplishment.
