"The real brutality against the Russians and (to a lesser extent) Ukranians started later. "
Hitler's biggest mistake.
At the beggining of the war his armies were welcomed by Ukrainians with flowers.

It was not entirely about propaganda. Just a year before Hitler was faced with the same dilemma: his armies were at the gates of Moscow when huge Russian offensive started. Hitler orders were precisely the same - not a single step back.
This decision was credited with saving entire central front - retreat in such conditions would quickly turn into rout.
No religion does not murder anyone. People do commit murders - some of them because of wanting to better their lives, some of them because of love and others because of religion.
Do you question value of love or wanting to improve ones live ?
Just because some indyviduals commit crimes in the name of some cause that does not mean this couse is wrong.
You are missing the point.
It is not about controlling masses...
If religion provides many people with happiness, why question that?
Remember that process of logical thinking does not conflict with religion. Religion is there to satisfy your spiritual needs, which is simply completely different ball game.
"Hitler himself was a devout Catholic and several times referred to what he was doing (the Holocaust) as God's work. "
Where did you get that ?
I read 3 different books about Hitler ( including one written by Irving ) and all of them agred that Hitler viewed religion as a temporarily acceptable means of keeping nation together.
He was anything but devout Catholic.
Heh, I am no Chess expert nor my intention is to underestimate skills needed to write decent Chess program.
Of course we are talking here about different ball game from your ussual GTK or C app found on freshmeat these days.
What I said was that making decent Chess program that will be able to defeat 90% people from general population is not that hard.
Frankly writing Chess program does not require a lot of hard core skills; all you have to come up with is decent search algorithm ( alpha beta with cutoffs will do ) and you are set.
The hard part is to come up with decent database of moves. You need somebody with expert skills in Chess.
"I love Linux, and I would love to see it replace Windoze, it just doesn't seem likely. "
Of source it is not.
For the average office users using Linux would mean going back about 10 years...
Yeah, it is where Linux is compared to Windows as far as desktop market is concerned.
On the server it is siply just another Unix , not the most powerfull or robust, but good enough to run ussual set of Unix services ( or deamons.)
Great for people who don't want to spend lot of money and have enough knowledge. In another words, it is a niche market.
Nothing wrong with that.
Yeah, Russians lost 600 000 soldiers during assault on Berlin. Twice as much as total American loses during the war.
You know, it does not take a genius to keep sending guys waiting for other side to run out of bullets...
Whow, amazing!
If you are as much interested in history as you claim it would not be that difficult to find out that Poland used to be one of the most powerfull countries in Europe in xv-xvii century and having "its own damn" country is not that much considering where they come from.
Oh well, Hitler at that point was regarded as just another, perhaps a bit eccentric German leader.
Nobody outside of Germany even suspected how disastrous it will end.
BTW.
I suspect that couple hundred years from now Hitler will be viewed in much better light than it is now.
After all, Caesar was just as cruel and caused (comparatively to his means) just as much suffering and death and yet he is not regarded as a grand murderer.
Stalin on the other hand was more like Nero; his extreme cruelty was mainly directed at his own people.
Anyway, I would much prefer living under Hitler rule.

1.Software is meant to be used by other people.

Come back when you find better system of values than religion.
Then will talk.

"I make every decision in my life for myself"
So do I.
I value religion for providing people with set of moral values which otherwise would be very hard to justify.

Huh ?
You mean bunch of Cubans with guns would be harder to deal with than entire Iraq army ?
"Nobody was taking out Radio Moscow"
Hmm, you are wrong. US did just that.

Yeah, Europe has even more pathetic laws requiring people to have internal equivalent of passport.

Impossible ?
It is not a tyranny. Nobody forces you to use these features.
Technology simply makes it easier.
What's wrong with that ?
"Drug companies funded "public" genome research"
So ?
So what ? Obviously, MS feels that in this society violence and sex are more likely to offend people than religion.
They are right.
This Japanese guys life must be a nightmare ..
