Yup. The whole voyager project was that way. The voyager programmers and engineers deserve a big trophy for that!

Willy Dog says they will announce a new operating system, and a new chip to run it on. It will be way cool, and manage to swing the binary compatibility thing with existing apps from a bunch of other OS's and processor families. And instead of a silicon chip, it will use a greenish gel containing DNA-based computing elements. And when it crashes, the gel turns blue -- the blue goo of death (BGOD)... it could happen!
and so is the series. Even George Lucas would have to admit that Knuth understands the big picture and how to fill it in. I cannot imagine what the world would be like if he had not written this material. Does it mean I'm an old fart if I read and enjoy owning Knuth's books? Re: the speech recog and language parsing -- have we forgotten about the cyc project? I think it could do what they say in the news release, just fine.
it's gonna take a while to build the sensors and work out the locomotion stuff. By the time the ball is ready, the software has had a lot of time to grow up. It would be a much nicer place for erwin to live.
