I have no problems with any kind of electronic voting, as long as I am the programmer, or circuit designer. You can't, without the source for every component, know that the system works. It may appear to work for a test run, But how do you know that the programmers didn't add some undoccumented functions? How can you verify a machine when it runs on Windows? Microsoft has proved in the DR-DOS days that they could detect other software, and influence it.

If you really care about accurate voting, Lets get rid of the machines. Go back to a verified, workable system and use paper ballots again.

Now since the license name doesn't match the social security name, and the birth certificate name she has to have all the documents fixed just to cash her paycheck. Her employment only requires a social security number, but to get paid requires so much more.

Checks used to be able to be cashed after they had been signed. Now they can be cashed when identification is given. The banks will no longer allow a check to be deposited, unless the name is on your account. So, no more cashing checks for friends..

Thats just a couple aspects of it. Changing what constitutes identification. Incidentally if you have four names and only three are listed you might want to check your voter registration...

Yes you confiscate a gun, whoppie. I can take my steel bodied ink pen and a paper bag full of gunpowder. No one is screening for matches. As long as we allow the people on board we are allowing weapons. The mind is the only real weapon anyway. I find the security in airports a joke. I flew threw Portland, recently, and a terminal was being remodelled, cordless drills and tools everywhere, with no one watching them at all(I assume it was the lunch break for the crew). Anyone could pick up and take whatever they want onto the plane. In Cincinati you can buy the nail
clippers that are prohibited in the terminal. Take liquids for instance, we don't check them to see if they are volatile. Anyone could walk on board with a 20oz Sprite bottle filled with nitro and no one would question it.

I will say it again airport security is a joke. period.

The only way that I see to secure our airlines, is to issue every adult border a knife/handgun/weapon. Then we can be sure that everyone is armed. Perhaps a simple check, "Are you prepared to defend the plane if terrorists attack?" if not you can drive.

    Just my 2 cents.

  14. FCC Charter on FCC Move Could Shut Down High School Radio Station · · Score: 1

Quite simply the FCC has ceased to fulfill a usefull function, from the peoples perspective. The original act in 1934 which created the FCC was flawed to begin with (http://www.spectacle.org/896/mistake.html) in several ways. Since that time it has ceased behaving in the public's interest and instead operates for profit.

(http://www.wzls.net/) WZLS was a locally run
station which the FCC decided to auction to the highest bidder. It makes for interesting reading. Over 6,000 of the locals in Asheville, NC signed a petition to save the station. This had NO affect.
WZLS had a varied format, they would play pop, rock, country, folk, blues, almost anything that the public requested. They truely served the community and have been much missed. The station that has taken over the frequency now plays canned oldies.

The truely sad thing, is that we have no construct in place to revoke a federal orginazations charter. I believe it should be a simple act. We can take them to court and try to modify them, but frequently that really can not accomplish what needs to happen.
The 1934 Act specifically mandated that the FCC would act in the interest of the "public convenience, interest, or necessity."(http://www.legal-database.com/communic ations-act-1934.htm)
Quite simply in the case of WZLS it has failed to do this.

In my mind that means it is time to replace the FCC as an entity. Some would say that one failing is not enough, but I feel that this behaviour is such that it must addressed. I do not believe it is too much to ask that my government operate correctly. To have a known error and continue is unacceptable. Clearly the FCC is run with a "good-enough" attitude. I don't believe that "good-enough" is a good strategy for running the land of the free.

    Just my 2 cents.

When the next constitutional congress convenes I suggest they make a simple structure for removing a governmental agency which no longer serves its charter.

Your only realistic option is to take the documents to an outside agency. Take them to kinkos and have them scanned in. Take the digital copy back and upload it.
You should present to your boss that the allocated budget for your project is enough for a one time job. In other words there aren't any revisions, no professors get to modify the documents after words. Which in and of itself does greatly reduce any value to the project.
To do this kind of job correctly, you need a high speed scanner either kodak, fujitsu or panasonic. Some software that will scan the documents in(easy to find or to make). And time. The scanner and the time are your big costs. A couple hundred just isn't enough to do it, more than once.
I would really recommend documenting what you can do for that amount and showing it to the boss. I imagine the powers that be will change their minds and realize that would be a problem for each professor.
On the other side you could push for the prof's giving you the document's digitally, it is after all a college. One could reasonably expect the prof's to type their own material, or have their TA's type it for them.
    Just my 2 cents....
Either way good luck, sounds like you need it.

  17. What am I missing on Forty Percent of All Email is Spam · · Score: 2, Interesting

It seems to me that stopping spam wouldn't be that difficult. Spam seems to be catogorized like this.

Type 1- Legitimate headers. No problem you've got someone to harass to remove you from the list. You can look up the domain name contact the admin and generally make their lives difficult. And if all else fails simply block everything from that domain.
Type 2- Forged headers, can't even send a bounce message back no real options for tracing short of contacting the isp in charge of the ip address.

Type 1 doesn't seem to be a problem. Type 2 is where most of my spam seems to come from. It seems that the simple solution would be when
sendmail/qmail whatever is receiving the message and gets the reply-to address it should pause and see if it exists. If it doesn't just leave the connection open and if they are bulk spamming
the server it's coming through will quickly have issues when it has 20,000 hanging connections. When a user pops/imaps to check their mail have the pop server see if the reply-to exists, if they don't dump it to dev null. It would seem that this would keep emails trackable. For it to get to the user the user would have the ability to get back to a person.

So my question becomes, what's the hole in this kind of answer? It seems simple enough. Am i missing something?
