    It was several years ago, though, and I am still trying to figure out all the stuff he didn't tell me, such as standard libraries, but that's where I turn to begining linux programing. It is a great book for learning how to write your regulation personal telephone book type app., though, and the version I got came with a cd that had all code, plus videos from the author, introducing and explainging each chapter.
    Not to mention it's kind of facinating, knowing as you read the back and forth between the author and the novice, that they end up married at the end of the book!

    it was actually the whole rest of her speech that made everyone go, "oh she's one of us,she understaaaaands!!", as you put it---or maybe made us go "oh I understand, now, about musicians position in the industry...and isn't it kool that she likes sci-fi books too!"

  15. Re:Deja Vu on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1

    A note to the uninformed medium format film is NOT 35mm--it is an approx 2 inch square of film, and is used to take much higher quality pictures then anything I have seen in a consumer(or even professional) digital camera.
    Of course that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use digital camera--a few years ago, I worked at a place where we used 4x5 cameras(yes, that's 4 inches by 5 inches of film) for all our work--we switched to digital because it allowed us to have a much greater turn around time,albeit at a large drop in quality. And we were using the best cameras available at the time--they were 10,000$ each, I can't rememember the model # but it was a kodak digital back mounted on a nikon N-90. The point is that the right format must be chosen for the application, and at the moment that means digital for speed, and film for quality!

    Ice cast provides all the software you need to broadcast the live stream (liveice), but freshmeat has all kinds of other little tools that make it easier too.You might ask the guys here how they do 'geeks in space'

    personally, I use icecast at home to stream mp3's to all the other machine's in the house--central storage of all mp3's and all types of machines can listen!(yeah, I know that just sharing the crap would be easier, but it was more exciting this way)

    It seems like there is something a little odd here--or maybe it's just me--I just can't figure out why this supposed linux PDA has repeat/game1 and launch/game2 buttons
    Also if you look at what seem to be screen shots you see some kind of what is supposed to be an mp3 player, and some kind of thing to watch videos(on a PDA?-well maybe it's a good idea?)--and something about development of the OS, and a web browser--the common thing between all of these is that are just screenshots from a regular desktop--there is no way that you would be able to read the text if text this small were on any PDA that I have ever seen
    Also, while it looks to my eye like the physical device that you see is a photograph, what they are showing on the screen is definitly some kind of badly drawn artist representaion of what it is linux is supposed to look like
    that kinda leaves me two options in my thinking--either this is badly faked, or they don't actually have any kind of working prototype, and are just hoping for someone to..well I really don't know what...

    then again, it's kinda seems like whoever wrote the page doesn't speak english either well, maybe it's all just a bad translation

    he wants to write something where the reader says "Wait a minute! That WAS science fiction, but it was also completely contemporary reality with next to nothing made up"
    I couldn't help thinking that this is the response I had to a certain recent novel--Let me think...what was the name again.....oh yeah! The Cryptonomicon! :-}

    stop thinking of the bearings as a way to track movement--think of them instead as a way to keep the user in one place
    use some kind of boot or sensor to determine what the foot is doing--this allows significantly more interaction with the environment, as movement in three dimensions can be measured--in other words you can kick something, or march, or whatever, and it will be reflected in the simulation.
    maybe I am just missing something, but it seems like you would like to model all of the bodies movement within the simulation---I keep thinking of the sword fighting in SnowCrash
