I kinda got the impression that this was a kinda sorta in-joke --otherwise they would have probably just used the weird 3d stuff that is in every other movie you see.
If I remember correctly it appeared that their were three different OS on the one machine, and they all ran on top of each other! I think it was intending to show the types of frustrations that people have over the little things in life, the ones that tend to piss you off every day, but don't matter to anyone else in the world.
I hope you took 2.whatever days off after that. they pay you for a certain number of hours--if you work more, well that's time you take off of the next couple a days!--it's like a free vacation. and if you are not set up that way, well what made you think the job is worth it? Everytime I ever planned a major upgrade that would require me to stay after hours, I told people that I wouldn't be around and why--they never had a problem with it, and kept off my back till I let them know I was available again. telling people that you have been working since they left the day before tends to shut them up!
just because gibson was first doesn't make him the God of cyberpunk, many of the ideas were there in earlier books, he just put them together--and Stephenson is not gibson for dummies--it is gibson off of the crack pipe you know where I first remember hearing about a cell phone? Space Cadet by Robert Heinlien, writen in like 194?, 195? something
it's been a while since I read it, but isn't this what the jargon file does?--at least in a way--it mentions the important docs, and their significance, although the versions I have seen don't link to or contain the actual docs. This is what it was created for though.
This is actually typical of Stephenson's story's--My favorite line from Snow Crash was "fromm there it was just a chase scene"--to me, it seems that he only describes things that are relevant to a charecter's further development, and fills in the story where neccesary
among the many other formats it understands, WinAmp plays CD's to--and will encode the new microsoft format, and wavs, and a couple other's i believe--the only reason it doesn't do MP3, I believe, is they don't want to pay the licensing fees
seems like everyone is saying that they already have an IRC client, why do we need another?--well this isn't an irc client!--from their page, it will apparently suppot multiple protocols, such as AIM, and IRC, and hopefully ICQ, etc. I don't know about anyone else, but this is excatly what I need! right now I have to run three different programs with three different interfaces to stay in contact with people. I think after reading, the unity of interface document, that this is what they are trying to do, in general, with mozilla. The project seems to have moved away from being a browser, to being a, uh, portal? a central interface for a large number of internet related programs, with similat UI's etc. The difference between this and a browser is the same as the difference between their Communicator and Navigator projects--one is just a piece of the other. In mozilla, I think gecko could be considered the browser component, and just a piece of the project overall.
anyway, that is my opinion, and yes it is probably wrong!
All of the meaning was stripped out of this movie, and what wasn't stripped out was watered down--if it hadn't been based on a great book it would have been a descent movie. They stripped out the most significant part of the whole book!--the powered armor!--the politics are the same as all Heinlein books, they could have made one of those, and people would have appreciated it more, but instead they take the first book about powered armour, and take out the powered armor!
sorry just had to get that out--I really wanted to see that stuff, it woulda been kool
What exactly is the number of hits based on? for example, if it is every time I load any page from slashdot, and I am using index mode as opposed to flat, well then my page hits will go through the roof! On the other hand, if it is just based on the frontpage...well, I can't think of anything--why would that be bad? There has to be a reason, right?
wrong--the dolphin was who he ends up teamed up with in the end of the story, for one thing---you need to both reread the book, and resee the movie, as other than adding a bunch of stuff at the beggining, it was fairly close, for a movie. if you want a bad example of book made movie, see any of the Heinlein crap that came out. they completely missed the point in all of them!
ah well
BB may be right on this but they still suck

I returned a three year old laptop for service, and ended up walking away with a brand new one--that is what I call service
remember that it says "through regular dev channels" that means you have to be a developer--which in cases like this usually means you have to be registered, sign licensing agreements, etc.--and even then they sometimes make you pay for the utilities! there is very little chance that just anyone can get there hands on this stuff. It probably isn't even that big of a deal to release it on linux. what do you think they did it on before? the most likely choices:dos/windows or some form of SGI workstation right? they are just cashing in on Linux's current hype
I keep wondering how many screens it's gonna show on. for instance, within 20 miles of my house there are around 100 screens (what whith various 24 and 30 screen theaters in the area) How many of those screens will it be on? I assume alot, as these are some of the biggest theaters in the world, right in the middle of one of the biggest cities in america(houston) but what if they only get like 1 film per theatre or something. on the other hand, they could put it in like 10 theaters--it won't sell out but the line will be a mile long--you won't be able to get to the end of it before the movie starts! I think the one thing that is guaranteed is that is that for that first week almost every showing will be packed. Even that cheesy John Grisham movie "The Firm" managed that much, at least at the theatre I worked at.
I have a friend who routeinly burns movies to vcd and plays them on his TV's DVD player--I would imagine that it wouldn't be any harder with a DVD RAM

PHB--Pointy Haired Bosses--from dilbert
why bother--for anyone to see it you have to pay for a commercial anyway--why not have someone add it in with the GIMP in postproduction!

win NT approx 300$ which is > 100$ :-} )
;-}
(unless you know how to buy it--then you can get it for 40$
anyway, in todays world you generally hear that the most expensive single component of the comp. is win. remember, computer's are cheap now

of course, I could be wrong...
just the most important one!
;-}
that was the LAST starwars article on slashdot!
most likely, the person who posted this got to it because of that earlierlink!
remeber that the idea is that mozilla is NOT a browser anymore--it is a suite of integrated internet applications
seems like everyone is saying that they already have an IRC client, why do we need another?--well this isn't an irc client!--from their page, it will apparently suppot multiple protocols, such as AIM, and IRC, and hopefully ICQ, etc. I don't know about anyone else, but this is excatly what I need! right now I have to run three different programs with three different interfaces to stay in contact with people. anyone else notice that in one of the CDE screenshots,he is looking at slashdot!

look again--the HTML rendering engine is only a small piece of the overall code
how big was Mosaic?---why would the HTML part need to be big?
All the responses to this one say that the users are the beta testers, in OSS. uh...isn't that a M$ thing?
