Updates - Pick one Apt-get, Yum, up2date, there are many other. Once you pick one you setup a reposter inside you orignaztion and you push the update out. Work better then SUS.
User Accounts - Most Use LDAP / Kerbose(sp?) which is sorta what Active directory is althought with MS slant.
Use Can even use Tar / DD your images for easy roll out.
I admit I haven't admin more the 15 Windows Desktops for a small group of 200 Students but from what I have seen on my day job as a user in Corp. with thousand of Windows 2000 Desktops is that windows has a way to catch up to linux in user managment abilty.
Read the whitesheet for Dspam http://www.nuclearelephant.com/projects/dspam/ they work not only with a signal word but with 2 words together for even better filtering. On the topic of DoS attacks all tokens are stored with a counter so how many combs would spamers have to come up with to fill a 10 Gig HD and that would be small by todays standards. I took over 120,000 Emails and ran it though dspam the results was about 1.3 Gig of tokens. Then ran there purning software and that number droped to under 800 Megs. Given that 800 Megs is a lot of space but compared to the 120 thousand emails it was a drop in the bucket.
But larger OEM were able to include netscape when Microsoft was telling smaller OEM that they couldn't include it or they would have to pay more to be able to include Windows. They did the same thing to OS/2. Past Experence say's real might have a case here. Also I used Real back in the 1.0 days and have watched it slowly go downhill tring to make a profit in a tighter and tighter market with WMP being given away for free on all PC sold today. Once Real is dead I would expect WMP to either never update see IE since they hit the 80% mark or even made worse with DRM technoledge that you can't get awayfrom.
If you want something like this to catch on then yes I would such a "point and grunt" interface. I have no doubt that if I wanted to I could figure out how to use the program but why should I if my mail server is working fine. If installing it require to spend to many hours to figuire out how to create the Key only to find out I should have done Y bit rate instead of the default X because that is what is required then I wouldn't bother and most admin are so over worked already that they wont be able to spend hours trying to get it running with everything else that has to be done.
I never said the price was right or wrong I said that is what they are charging for and why a company would pay the money. I use Fedora on my home server but if I had a company I was setting up for I would use RHE or Debian as they have support for many years and wont cost the company alot of money to have be spend 3 Hours every few months reinstalling the lasted OS to keep everything working fine. 300 Dollors a years would be cheaper then have me come in twice a year and do os updates on the server. My hours rate isn't cheap.
One thing I see over and over again. The smtp.roadrunner.com or what ever you smtp server is would wrap around you email saying it came from roadrunner but you from address could still say abc@abc.net.
I read it also. What it sound like they are doing is not related to the from: address or who is sending the mail but were the mail is coming from. In other words I own abc.com and my ISP is comcast.net. When I send mail to abc@yahoo.com it goes to smtp.comcast.net. smtp.comcast.net signs the message as comcast.net and yahoo.com confirms it came from comcast.net if it turns out that it was spam then yahoo.com can go back to comcast.net and say message ID x came from your server and it was SPAM. Comcast goes and finds out that message X came from my IP address and my account is suspended until I promise to never do it again or have my account cancelled for good. If comcast.net doesn't do anything about me then yahoo.com can stop accepting messages from comcast.net.
>> I expect that some tools will be available to >> generate the keypair.
> Why would you need special tools? What's wrong > with Gnupg and PGP?
Because most people don't want to read a 20 page description on how to make it work right. My guess it will either be a script that calls gnupg direct or uses a library from gnupg or other already existing program like PGP.
- Alice wants to send an email to Bob. - Alice uses Email program to send mail to smtp.isp.net - smtp.isp.net after confirming Alice is one of there users signs message with priviate key of isp.net then send to Bob's ISP. - Bob's ISP get message and confirms that Public Key for isp.net matches and message did come from isp.net. and puts it into Bob's Pop account. - Bob get email and never knew happen other then maybe something as "Confirmed mail came from isp.net on the bottom of the email or a header added on. - If Bob ISP gets a message that says it came from isp.net but doesn't contain the Key then they can pass thought as non-confirmed from isp.net or delete as spam since isp.net has keys on all it message. - If Bob ISP gets a message that says it came from isp.net with a key but it fails the test could be easily delete as Spam, or possible marked as failed to be confirmed from isp.net. - Both making it eaier for bob to filter based on.
because over time you pay more and more to keep those up todate. If there was this open source retail outlet software out there and it was being worked on by say several vendor like IBM and XXX I don't known who maters. Most of the cost for setting up a system like that is hardware. So if IBM and 4 other companys in that space work to agree to work together and create and open system ontop of an open standard then cost to mantain the system would go down for all 4 Vendor that would be a compitive advantage to me. Also note at the company I would for it is a major US corparation who name you would reconize. When we needed a system to manage SNMP reports we went a took an OPEN Source one an made interenal changes for things like company logo and such and have a good system that is open source being supported but a 3rd party company for support. So this idea has happened in the past and I have seen examples all the time with things like this.
Open Source doesn't mean no developer gets paid just that there work is open. As you said "literally dozens of companies" if those companies were to develop a libEUcertiefiedinvoicemanagement and all 12 companys paid to help get it maintained then the development cost for all 12 companys would drop by 1/12 of the cost for this part. Then each company would just have to get there frontend up today and working with the new library fuctions over time. This is also the open souce way as well.
Do Not go jogging with a HD based player. The Flash based one are fine for that but as someone who has owned a HD based one it would last though 1 Jogging session without the drive going bad.
Because if you have a server that is running well and doing what you want it to do you don't want to break it. So RedHat backport secuirty fixes to eailier version instead of fource you to use CVS or New Releases that could break things in your server. That Process of backporting is what they are paying for. If you start with Apache 2.05 you keep Apache 2.05 with patches for secuity. That are then tested to confirm that nothing apears to break and if things break redhat fixes them and release a new package update all based on 2.05 not 2.xx instead.
Doubtful. If you read the TOS on you cable modem if you charge those 12 Kids anything you are reselling a NoNo for most cable modem custmers. If you are renting rooming in single house and they share kicten and address you would be a single household and should be fine if you have 12 different address that could be considered theif of cable services.
Cheap ADSL connections like Versions 49.95/59.95 type accounts do. The SDSL/"Bussiness" class accounts don't. Note Comcast does make a version that alows servers and give static IP but it cost alot more and is done thought the Bussiness Service Group. So in the end it comes down to money. I would check and see if speakeasy is avaible in your area they are a good inbettwen.
Well I can tell you it depends on what I am searching for. If I am in the market to buy something then I am more likely to click on the paid results. Whereas when I am tring to find out how to make this cannon i550 Printer work under linux then I wont click on a paid result.
They use these thing called recover CD. Stick them in reboot and come back in 1 Hour to reset things up. also average users just use the PC until rebooted take 30 Mins and you have to do it after 10 Mins of use.
That is 1 p2p I would probly install. The only import thing would be a way to control upstream on the client but out side of that I would be happy to be one of those drowns.
Have you noticed how many sites now say Media Player on them. A few years ago they were Realplayer or Quicktime. Some Sites still run 2 or 3 Different players but more and more are just playing WMP. Is it because WMP is cheaper? Is it because WMP is better? or Is it because WMP comes on 90% of PC sold in the last 3 to 4 Years? That is the question. If it is because it came on 90% of the PC in the last 3 to 4 Years then that is moply abuse.
Depends on your point of View. Qucken 2002 I believe require that IE5.0 plus a ton of other microsoft updates as well. It took care of updating in Linux Terms your "mozilla, Glib, Gnome, Xfree, Kernal" In Windows term it updated you to IE5,direct X,inserted 128 Bit crpty, and my favorite the winsock2 update. Office 97 Automaticly update GLib infact if you install Office 97 after IE5.x you will start see really ugly crashes because of poor DLL control.
Have you ever installed ISP software. Most installers for ISP software make major changes to the OS. Under Windows 98 most ISP software will install IE 6.0, Change Network Settings, Setup OE, Change your home page, install support.com agent. Plus many other things. Yet I don't see something / someone on slashdot complaining about the Earthlinks installer or X isp installer. Get a life. If the change breaks thing trust me people will be calling AOL to have them fix the problem. I would also have to see how they make that change. If it checks during install of the patch/new install make change and that is it then fine. If it goes and checks everytime it logs on that could break the 1 or 2 Apps that depend on that service.
First this is how I upgrade and it is command based. I would be easy to put into a cron job and let run in the background. 2nd there are several programs out there that add a pretty front end to apt-get that would give some the fuction of apt-get without the command line requirement.
Yes and see some of my other posting about load balancing it.
The idea is that a batch of spam go out point to www.spamer.com / 192.168.1.1. A trusted member of the group looks at the spam and confirmed that it is a spam and that 192.168.1.1 is in deed the spamers website. Then adds him to the p2p distribed list.
Bam within few mins hundreds of system are hitting his system not buying anything just proventing those people who would buy thing from getting there. Making the effect time frame for spam from a few hours to a few mins.
Can spamers make money on that small of a windows? Spamer will adapt they alwas will. They will have to do so by making sites that are included in only a few 1000's instead of millions so the site wont get slashdot. That will require more and more sites to deal with.
See prior slashdot artical "Spammers Using Hacked Machines as Decoys" but then they run the risk of having more legel problems with hacking laws that unlike spam laws do have teeth. Also there are a limited number of PC out there that can be corrupted.
I know at time it seems to be unlimited but once a user has been shutdown for being infected with a virus they buy the antivirus software and download updates regularly after that.
In the end the idea is to make the thin line of profit go below the cost line. How much time is spent dealing with getting new bot then making a spam run of say only 1000 because if it is larger then that we would kill the bot before an order could get possible thought. Then repeat. Yes they would go out and get 100 bot then send 100,000 Emails but that is alot more work then getting 1 or 2 and sending 100,000 or 1,000,000 emails.
No what I am saying is that spamers will adapt to this new treat and do smaller batch spread accross more machines show that there desired trafic can still get thought. More and more spamers are using Highjacked Cable Modem / DSL Connections so bandwidth become more of an issue when the desired people can't get thought the when hundred of ous do get thought. I think the idea has merit and will raise the bar again and reguire spamers do even more illeage thing to get the junk out make it easier to convect without alot of new and usless laws.

"system monitors and watchdogs" how are those programs going to watch something with out data being inputed in some form?
