Yeah, and that's just salary. The real money is in research grants. I have an acquantance who works as a lab tech. Her boss, a PhD at UCLA, usually has about a dozen or so research subjects running at once, with each being funded by one or two grants. In fact, the only work that individual does is think of new things to research and file the appropriate papers, grad students and lab techs do the actual work. Pretty good gig, if you can put in the 20 years of school and work it takes to get it.
I'm far more worried about the divorse lawyer or the ex-employee with an axe to grind then I am about the Government.
I've been seeing this a lot lately, and can't understand why people screw it up so badly.
"Then" refers to a point in time. "Than" is used as a comparison. The sentance should read "I'm far more worried about the divorce lawyer or the ex-employee with an axe to grind than I am about the Government." Yes, yes, typos happen, but this happens so often that I think people honestly think they're saying "then" when they're saying "than".
+1, Ironic. You claim the government is overreacting by shouting in hysterics because someone phoned in a hoax tip which was subsequently proven to be a hoax and dropped. Go outside, take a breath of fresh air, and relax for pity's sake.
Of a very knee-jerk reaction to security here in the US
Knee-jerk in what way? I don't remember Fulci being placed at the top of the Most Wanted List. Was there an APB put out for him? Did Bush get in front of the microphones and say we had a new, greater, enemy in the war on terror? No, some nutjob phoned in a "tip", and after it went through various channels someone discovered it was a hoax. It happens all the time, nothing to see here, move along.
Nah, just paint it black and white, put black crosses on the shoulder pads, and go grizzly huntin' with your bolt pistol and power sword. A bear would be, what?, S4 T4 W2? A single Marine could handle one.
You're right, better to just visit the local zoo and admire Iraqis in a close simulation of their natural environment. Though you have to wonder, do Iraqis breed in captivity?
Do you know how to use google or read an encyclopedia?
Do you know how to provide a hyperlink? Besides, neither search engines nor encyclopedias are useful if you don't have a place to start.
Try researching Irgun and Lehi, the two main pre-Israel state terrorist groups.
Hmm, interesting stuff. I just took a second to read through the Wikipedia entries for them both. Very thought provoking stuff. I almost wonder if the last 50 years worth of terrorist attacks could've been held off if the British hadn't pussied out when dealing with the Jewish terrorists in the first place (Arab terrorists today may look at that victory as inspiration to keep up their attacks). No big surprise that most of our problems can be laid at the feet of the Brits (again).
According to these documents, again from the OMB, the Federal budget for FY2005 will be $2.4 trillion. According to the good ol' CIA World Factbook, the US GDP in 2002 was $10.45 trillion. Even without factoring in the 2.45% GDP growth rate the WFB lists, that means that next year's Federal budget is only 23% of the total GDP.
I could take the time to figure out the actual GDP is, and even throw in the numbers for state and local governments, but these numbers are close enough for Slashdot. Suffice to say, none of this supports the idea that the government drives the economy in any major way.
"Perhaps, but I sure as hell would not be targeting unarmed civilians."
I would.
You wouldn't really gain anything by it. "Hearts and minds", remember? All you'd do is play into the hands of the occupying authorities, who could paint you as a terrorist and use that to justify whatever they wanted to justify. In the long run, committing attrocities just doesn't pay. Look at the problems the US is having over a handful of BFE hicks who got their jollies from debasing prisoners. Whatever intel their actions helped them gather is waaaay offset from the damage they've done to our creditibility and ability to administer Iraq as they get their legs under them.
Face it, the Palestinians and Israeli both have pretty horrific pasts and present.
Ya know, I've heard this claim before, but have never seen any evidence which supports it. I think it's just one of those anti-Israeli memes that's floating around, used by people who think the Palestinians are brutal thugs, but who still want to support them. ("Sure, they're brutal, but so were/are the Israelis, so it's OK.")
The ugly fact is that the palestenians are occupied and are fighting to gain their country back.
Interesting. And what country would that be? Palestine? Never existed as a seperate country.
Here's the two second breakdown for you: the Ottoman Empire, at the beginning of the last century, controlled most of the Middle East. The area that is now Israel was ruled over them, and occassionally administered by the Egyptian Viceroy, a semi-independent vassal of the Ottoman caliph. The Viceroy was backed by the British, as a way to split the interests of the Ottomans.
Right around the time of WWI, the Viceroy withered away, the Ottoman Empire broke up, and Britain added most of the Middle East to its empire. Over the next few decades, various countries were born out of that mess, as the British empire itself died a slow death. Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria, what we think of as Egypt, all these countries owe their existance to this breakup.
Now, this part is important: Israel was created by the British (with help from the newly formed UN and the US, but really it was Britain's land to begin with) during this same time period. So Israel is as legitimate a nation-state as any of the others listed. There had always been Jews living in the former Ottoman empire, especially the portion referred to on maps as "Palestine" (which was never an autonomous nation-state, at least not since the Middle Ages when it was ruled by Crusader kings). However, pretty much all of the Arab countries which had just been born decided they didn't like the idea of having a Jewish state in their backyard. So they started yelling and complaining, and launched several unsuccessful wars of aggression against Israel. During these wars, Israel increased their land holdings, but usually gave the land back, eventually.
As for the "Palestinians" themselves, they've never surrended to Israel, constantly running either a guerilla war or outright terror war (there is a difference, even if only a semantic one). Given that, it's hard to fault Israel for not extending them the hand of friendship. Maybe if the Arabs laid down their arms and stopped behaving like a bunch of rabid dogs, civilized people could take them seriously for once.
The important point here is that there has never been an independent country called "Palestine", and the "Palestinians" have no more right to the land they're living on than the Jews who also do.
Go to the site. Notice the banner ads? They are for competing services to paypal.
Well, think about it. Who else is going to advertise on a site complaining about PayPal? McDonald's? Ford? Wal*Mart? This is no different from Microsoft advertising on Slashdot.
Sure, it seemed a little fishy at first, since the only ads coming up were all for YowCow.com (some auction site, from the looks of it). But after awhile, a merchant bank's ad came up. Oh, and, according to whois, PayPalSucks.com is run by a guy in Arizona; YowCow is based in Australia. Not likely they're the same people. So it's not like PayPal's competitors put up the site, they just recognize a target audience when they see one.
Bullshit. According to this page from the Office of Management and Budget, total government spending from all sources accounts for 28% of GDP in the US. Private spending accounts for the rest. So, again, go educate yourself on the basics of economics before spouting off on/.
Actually, we think we're smarter than Canadians because we don't have sizable minority trying to change us from being an English speaking nation, to a bilingual nation. Bendejo.
You're assuming that government spending is the end all, be all, of the economy. I suggest you go read some Milton, Von Mises, and Hayek, and rethink your basic assumptions of how economies work.
Please also note that such accidents are probably way more easy to prevent than terrorist strikes.
To prevent 1000 deaths from auto accidents, you have to prevent anyway from 100 to 1000 seperate incidents. To prevent 1000 deaths from terrorists, you only have to prevent one incident. So how is it easier to prevent 1000 seperate incidents, than just one?
You have no idea what the Bush administration did prior to 9/11 to prevent terrorists from striking the US, and you apparently have no idea what "liberties" have been lost since then, either.
All that's happened, is that some dumb college kid wanted to get information on secure tunnels under a college. He was rebuffed, and filed a request for the information anyway. So, someone in the records office called the Terrorism Task Force, to report suspicious behavior. A couple of agents came out, had a brief chat with him, and that's pretty much it. They'll probably keep the file open for awhile, but how much effort do you really think they'll spend on him?
As for your comment about "mere thousands", that's just sick. You should be ashamed of yourself.
i would have no problem with that, IF THEY WERE INVESTIGATING AN ACTIVE CASE
Gotcha, you want to wait for someone to blow up the University of Texas, potentially killing thousands of innocent people, before police start investigating things.
So, tell me, do you blame the Bush administration for 9/11? Do you think they did enough to stop the terrorists?
Yeah, and that's just salary. The real money is in research grants. I have an acquantance who works as a lab tech. although on this level a working suit could probably be constructed out of cardboard and duct tape
Sounds great. You go test it. Don't forget to have a friend with a 10x zoom camcorder hiding in a nearby tree.
Just remember: some days you eat the bear, and some days, well, some days, the bear, he eats you.
Nah, just paint it black and white, put black crosses on the shoulder pads, and go grizzly huntin' with your bolt pistol and power sword. A bear would be, what?, S4 T4 W2? A single Marine could handle one.

Now, add Christianity and Judiasm as well, and you will be (mostly) correct.
Wow, what an ignorant and intolerant statement.
Oh, wait, you're a liberal, so it's OK. My bad.
"Perhaps, but I sure as hell would not be targeting unarmed civilians."
I would.

Pffl. Do you honestly think the percentage of GDP that is government spending has changed significantly in three years?
Go to the site. Notice the banner ads? They are for competing services to paypal.

That only applies to the guys at Gitmo. The ones we've captured in Iraq are POWs, and noone has called them anything but.

Apparently, increasing memory access times wasn't the panacea they thought it would be.
