Allowing heirs to sit on this "property" indefinitely does not surve this purpose.
Then it's a good thing that copyright isn't indefinite then, isn't it? You might not like the length of time copyright runs, but that doesn't change the fact that there is, indeed, a time limit to it.
What has been mentioned as well was updating the software on the card at the banking terminal - I'm surprised that this is possible at all. Essentially, that opens another huge security gap (which might have been there for a long time but went unnoticed so far).
Since you need the card itself and the PIN with that card to update it, it's not really insecure. And having the ability to change software and/or PINs without mailing things all over the place is a pretty reasonable (and handy) ability. The alternative would be for customers to mail in their cards and wait for them to be sent back weeks later; or have two cards that can access your account at the same time, and then depend on the customer to dispose of the old card properly. Those scenarios are much more prone to error than what they're doing in this case.
No, but I might name a brand of beach towels Apple, or ski boots, and what exactly would Apple Inc. or Apple Corps Ltd (remember them?) do about it?
Sue the shit out of you. And win, because they have more money. Or did you forget that Apple Corps sued Apple Computer back in the day and won a settlement that kept Apple Computer out of the music business until the latter Apple had enough money to tell the former Apple to screw off?
The constitution says congress can grant a limited time monopoly to authors and inventors. NOT their heirs.
Congress has determined, in their ineffable wisdom, that copyrights count as property, and so they can be transferred to other people. In this case, to the heirs of the original owner. They're still limited to a certain time, but there's nothing inherently unconstitutional about that scheme.
The Chinese will probably translate "Nexus" to mean "connection point" and then mangle that to "post" in the sense of a post in a fence; "one" will then be translated as "first".
So yeah, look for the First Post phone to come out in about six months.
Strictly speaking, the language we're using right now came from those Nordic raiders. The one used by the indigenous people in Britain was more like modern Irish (not that you hear that much anymore, either).
Methods like this are almost always unpopular and never result in the manager being liked.
I've liked some of my managers, and I've respected some of my managers. There have only been a handful (so far) in a 20 year career that I've both liked and respected. Any manager overly concerned with being liked simply isn't going to be as effective as they could be and the entire team is going to suffer for it.
I think Janet Napolitano (inadvertently) got it right when she said immediately after the event that "the system worked". That is, if by system she meant "relying on the post-9/11 understanding of passengers to use force to subdue suspected terrorists". You can't stop everyone from getting through, and you don't even need to since the people on the plane know that their lives are on the line. They'll take care of the problem much more effectively than some government agency chock full of ne'er-do-wells and morons.
I have to wonder why there's no mention of the Somali pirates who took over that American container ship. I mean, what did they expect was going to happen? There were Americans on that thing!
why not spend some time reading about the countless times when some honest, moral, and ethical person's life was dramatically improved
Why not spend some time reading about the countless times when those same individuals have had their lives destroyed? Start with Radley Balko's pieces in Reason, you might find your notions of the inherent goodness of police challenged a bit.
If I go into a large crowd somewhere in the US and start shouting that you guys deserved 9/11 for your arrogance, not only am I likely to start a riot - I'm also likely to get beaten to death or shot.
Have you actually tried this? Because I've seen street protesters saying this exact same thing and the worst that's happened to them is they get a bunch of dirty looks (which is also a kind of speech). Sure, if there's a big political thing in town, the cops will arrest you and everyone within a hundred feet of you to "prevent a riot", but that's a whole different problem in and of itself. The general populace here is typically very tolerant of unpopular opinions.
How does a county judge in nowhere New Jersey have any jurisdiction over multiple companies that are not in his county?
It's called the Long Arm Statute. A court can order a party outside of its jurisdiction to perform a given act if it's relevant to a case in front of the court. The other party can of course file a motion in their local court to ignore the order, but from what I've seen in my short life most judges in the US will back each other up 98% of the time. So that motion will be denied and you'll have done is bought yourself a little time and one pissed off judge.
Not only that, but if someone is going to complain about us "playing God", they probably have a religious mindset so they have even less reason to complain. After all, didn't God give Adam dominion over the animals of the world after Adam named them all? So if you believe the myth, we're just doing God's work for him.
Let's look at the facts: people live in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to this day. Not only that, you can have a picnic at Ground Zero. So you're completely full of shit and have probably never been to Hiroshima in the first place.
Secondly, the point the OP was making was that war deaths today are a fraction of the deaths in WW2. You want to compare civilian deaths? The numbers at IraqBodyCount.org are quite suspect, but let's say there were 500,000 civilian deaths just for argument's sake. There were over 100,000,000 civilian deaths in WW2 and almost 3,000,000 deaths in Korea. The numbers in Iraq just don't compare to previous wars.
Inhumane harvesting of [f]ur sucks. There's nothing wrong with harvesting the fur from an animal, as long as you treat the animal with kindness and respect while it's alive. Just because we're going to eat the animal or use its skin after we've killed it doesn't justify wanton and cruel behavior.
Depends on what the alpha on the investment is compared to the RFR in the market. 8% might be crap if the beta is the alpha is positive.

Damn Mayans and their inability to correctly predict the end of the world! It came two years early!
Conrad Hilton had been dead for 30 years, does that mean the Hilton family should give up their hotels?
No, but I might name a brand of beach towels Apple, or ski boots, and what exactly would Apple Inc. or Apple Corps Ltd (remember them?) do about it?

Look a little to the northeast of that location, just south of the fossil river. It's plain as day.
Strictly speaking, the language we're using right now came from those Nordic raiders. The one used by the indigenous people in Britain was more like modern Irish (not that you hear that much anymore, either).
You know the famous one doesn't have a monopoly on that name, right?
Well, it would be rather fitting if he did.

If that happens, I predict Hooters Air will become hugely successful. No pun intended.
What a coinkidink! Lucky us, we'll get to see new idiots in Parliament AND Congress! What could possibly go wrong?
I have to wonder why there's no mention of the Somali pirates who took over that American container ship. I mean, what did they expect was going to happen? There were Americans on that thing!
Given the way this guy is whining and begging rather than just doing something about it, I'd say MySQL is already forked.

And Patrick is not his last name, so I'm not sure what your point was...
It's SIr Patrick, you use the last name when someone is a peer.
