  1. Delivery Reports on SMS Messaging Unreliable · · Score: 1

On all the mobile phones I've used there is a way to turn on delivery reports. When I used this on my Nokia 3330 in the UK I would get a report back once the message was delivered, if it failed to deliver immediately, or if it had tried for too long and the message had timed out (I had it set to a week on my phone). These delivery reports seemed to be 100% reliable in my experience.

With my Siemens C45 here in Kenya I also get messages telling me if the phone was switched off or unreachable, but they are a little confusing, and I've sometimes sent a message several times when my phone said 'Unable to send message, try again?', and then discovered that the recipient got a whole load of copies. Sometimes I don't get the report back and sometimes I do. I think it might be down to the fact that Kencell isn't as reliable as Orange, and also because I'm sending international text messages.

By the way, if your phone doesn't have delivery reports you can add RCT to the start of your message and it will turn on delivery reports. The letters RCT won't be delivered but the rest of the message will. (It might be RPT, I can't remember).

When I say it's obviously a mistake, I was pandering to the majority of slashdot readership. I don't have anything against VB per se, but then, I'm not sure what 'per se' stands for.

I know that VB is widely used and its useful for getting work, but I'll have to agree with the person I'm replying to - that the syntax of VB is not very uniform.

My brother (who, by the way, has become pretty adept with JScript now), has now had a look at VBScript, and asks questions like "why do I have to put brackets round the arguments to this function, but not the other one?".

Fortunately VB.NET will iron out a lot of these foibles. But .NET also introduces C#, which I'm afraid I'm going to have to admin to loving to bit! What I'd really like to see now if a version of C# for *nix. Doesn't have to compile to MSIL - native code would be good. I'd just like to be able to use C# rather than C++. (I wonder, how easy would a translator be.

Right, I'm wandering around all over the place except for on topic, so I'd better wrap up!

  8. Teaching my brother on Developing for the Linux Desktop · · Score: 2

My brother had never had a computer until three years ago I bought him one when he went back to University. The first technical thing he learnt was creating HTML pages. Then he moved on to Director and learnt lingo, but only very basic stuff. Then a couple of months ago I started to teach him JScript for use in ASP. This was a good place to start I think, because being a scripting language it doesn't need any complicated compilation. There's no need to learn about data types. The syntax is close to C and Java. And it's possible to do something relatively interesting without too much coding. This is similar to the position BASIC used to play. Except that the step from BASIC to most languages is quite a big one, unless you go to VB, which is obviously a mistake!!

Not much. Mainly just automatic internet dial up and NAT. Some Apache, PHP, JSP, file sharing. It just sits in the cupboard and does its stuff, while my Win2k box sits under my desk and does its stuff. (Hasn't crashed for a few months, but I do switch it off every night!!).

I'm still on 2.2.x because I have 230 days of uptime and I want to get to 365! And I reckon that since my server has been running for 230 days on 2.2.x there's not much call for an upgrade.

Now if I was running Linux on my desktop it would be a different matter.

I have to disagree. The DVD output from the Scan SC2000 is excellent. The only problem I have come across is playing of normal audio CDs, where is has a tendency to skip. Playing MP3s is fine though.
