  1. SSN numbers on How are 'Secret Questions' Secure? · · Score: 1

The first three digits are based on where the SSN was issued (typically where you're born), so they aren't useful anyway. I have the impression the middle pair isn't all that helpfor for some other reason, though I could be making that up.

The bigger issue is that they aren't really indented to be private, and at this point clearly aren't.

  4. what is the cost of invoicing on WiFi Free-For-All · · Score: 1

Keep in mind that the cost of operating an invoice system could be much higher than what they're making off of it. That doesn't mean they won't be losing money (looking just at the WiFi, ignoring the draw to buisness) but it may have turned out that it was more effective not to charge. This was the case with...okay I can't search for crap...some university decided to make its long distance phone service free because it cost more to charge the students than what they were actually using in the first place. The access points are already in place after all.

the second page of the article has a lovely picture of a rotating wall vessel. Basically it spins and sets other forces inplace to counter the force of gravity. The common thing to do for simulating micro-G for big things (over short periods of time) is to drop them. Usually you drop them inside a plane so they don't stop suddenly.

Its amazing the things we give up over time, and later decide we want.
I don't think I've ever been into a contemporary home with a dumb-waiter in it. And how about vacuum tube devlivery: totally relegated to banks (and Home Depot). Yeah, sure, email is taking everything over. But when you really need a signature on something, vacuum tubes rock. Installing vacuum tubes through my house, now that's the kinda large scale project that I want to wast my time on.

  8. Re:Contiune your education... on Internships in the Post-DotCom Era? · · Score: 1

I'd have to disagree that you'll need a load of cash to get through school. I'm completing my MS in May and have basically made money just by being in the University. Getting financially set up by the school is pretty easy.

An internship is especially important now that there are piles of people coming out. There are also other options for standing out from the crowd though. I know its been featured before, but working on an open source project is resume fodder. Another thing to consider is that a lot of non-profits could use help, but won't really be offering "internships" per se. If you're having trouble finding a paying gig, seek out a group you think you might like to work with, and they'll probably have a bunch of broken "cup holders" and a some organization/web descign to do.

I know that the number of applicants to my University have increased by well over an order of magnitude this year, fwiw.

It's never realyl occured to me before that a black hole would be of infinite size in terms of out ability to measure distance (either with light, or a really big yard stick). Even if the mass is finite.
The thing that strikes me is that the universe itself it finite in sixe (though unbounded - akin to the surface of a sphere from a 2D perspective).
