  1. On the contrary on Aussie Company Planning To Use Drones For Textbook Delivery · · Score: 1

Well, I wanted to post a snarky reply like "It's not at all surprising that you haven't heard of one yet." but the US has been using RC planes to "assassinate" targets in the middle east for quite some time. They just do it with small bombs instead of a bullet.

Seriously - you must not. The abuses we've seen (which are, I should point out, minor in the grand scheme of 7 billion people going about their daily lives) are a known flaw in an imperfect system of multiple tribes of people sharing the same country/continent/planet. The conditions have existed since there were humans to fight one another.

I would ask that you propose an alternate system which provides a similar level of intelligence and allows proactive resolution to potential conflicts *before* suggesting we scrap the system entirely. Because to go without a system would be the ultimate in foolishness.

To be pedantic: life does, in fact, require food. One might even include shelter in that requirement given that much of the US climate can be considered deadly to the unsheltered at certain times of the year. Reasonable transportation is a bit of a longer stretch, but liberty would include at least the freedom to move about, and the pursuit of happiness could imply at least the ability to find transportation which enabled such a pursuit.

Personally, I'd like to see them starve, die from exposure, or - at the least - hear them complain about lack of efficient bus routes.

Amazingly, with three vehicles between me and my wife I can do all of those things *AND* average about 26-28 MPG combined on all the vehicles. It can't be done with a single vehicle, but that doesn't mean that any of the three are wholly impractical.

I'm more impressed each press release by Tesla - not because of anything in particular, but because it seems so impossibly hard for every other manufacturer in the world to even get to half of the Model S range on batteries alone. In fact, if there weren't actual, on the road vehicles I would say - based on their marketing literature and the performance of every other manufacturer - that they were full of shit and may as well be hyping the Moller AirCar.

I'm with the GOP - repeal it entirely or I'll hold my breath until I pass out. Or something like that.

  13. Exactly how government gets formed on Sick of Your Local Police Force? Crowdfund Your Own · · Score: 5, Insightful

What you are seeing here is the birth of a government. First it's law enforcement, paid for by voluntary contributions. Then maybe some additional services - upgraded fire or rescue. Then it gets big enough that someone has to start working full time to manage it. If everyone decides (as often happens) that the people organizing this shouldn't be profiting, they all agree to take turns. Of course, this becomes cumbersome and they really find they need more continuity so the community chooses 3-4 people who will manage it, and they change those people every couple of years to each person doesn't get burned out. Then after a couple years the revenue starts flagging, and they realize that they're going to have to reimburse the organizers, and have to find a way to make sure everyone is contributing. So they form a local organization which includes everyone getting services and they agree on a way to split the costs equitably so everyone gets a bill. Most places choose the split by land area or value. Soon enough they realize that with everybody paying, they can get better garbage service, and maybe even reform the schools if everyone kicks in a little more.

And then one street decides that they aren't really getting enough service, so they take up a collection for a private security firm to supplement the (now official) police...

If you and your friends have guns you don't need a military.
