    Join a public game with some other characters - he's tougher than before because he has blocking now. What character are you using? Ranged characters like Amazon and Sorceress were never very good at fighting any boss alone early in their careers.

    Are you nuts? Or have you just never progressed beyond nightmare difficulty in the game yet? Chars that were once mighty are far less effective due to the new synergies. Normal and nightmare are still a breeze, but hell is much harder now, I think you will like it

    Tell me about it. My thing was full-pay video poker, but that has gotten difficult to find in Las Vegas and downright impossible elsewhere.

    I wasn't aware slot machines ever got into positive return territory, even with high progressives - how do you know the base payout (and jackpot frequency for that mattter) in order to calculate the progressive's effect on net payout?

    It's important to point out that the first season played under the "British" rules was boring as hell and ratings were in the toilet. Since this new format was adopted it is much more of a success.

    Given that France and German are blithely ignoring the deficit constraints required by the Euro agreement, it's only a matter of time.

    If you think that deficit spending will lead to devaluation of currency, then be ready for the U.S. dollar to be worth the same as the peso. It doesn't work that way, at least not in black and white.

    It is perfectly legal everywhere and even if for some reason it wasn't how the hell would they prove it?! The only real criteria used to discover counters is whether or not they are winning (there are some more subtle hints like increasing your bet from $5 to $50 but good counters wouldn't make a spread this large; They'd "hide their tracks" by keeping spreads lower)

    Because a casino is private property, they can eject whoever they please without a legitimate reason. This is the official approach.

    In most places that's true, but you can find games in Vegas that use 1 or 2 decks quite easily. Especially downtown. Forget about it anywhere else in America, but I would never play against more than 4 decks in Vegas.

    This is the so-called "Martingale system" (presumably named after the inventor) and it has been proven many times to be a disastrous strategy. A limitation that usually kicks in before your bankroll runs out is the table maximum bet. If the betting range for the table is $5-$100 you can only lose 5 times, then you're out $155 trying to earn a measly $5. No thanks.

    Think in more general terms man. Of course nobody will care about your ASP.NET or Solaris skills then, but think about the amazing algorithm analysis or compiler design skill you could develop over that period of time. Personally, I'm jealous.

    Java Cookbook is indeed an excellent book, but I don't think I would recommend it for beginners. I find case study books to be a much better way for an experienced programmer to see how an unfamiliar language works.

    New Riders' XML, XSLT, Java, and JSP: A Case Study in Developing a Web Application is a fine example of a case study book that I recommend.

    Good effort, but the Wizard of Odds site you linked to uses mathematical exhaustion as opposed to you general heuristics.

    There is an outstanding product out there to train you to play "optimal" video poker (that is, make the mathematically best choice for any 5-card deal. A crippled shareware version can be found here, but this proprietary software is worth many times its' price: WinPoker (sorry Windows only, and no I have no financial incentive to plug)

    Never forget that Poker (against other people online or in person) and Video Poker (where you try to complete the best hand to win a fixed payout) are COMPLETELY different games with very little shared strategy.

    Oh come on. The article isn't about addiction, but addicted or not, playing poker is this man's full-time job. He is skilled enough so that in the long run he will make money.

    This is possible with UT and Quake too, although somewhat different because in high stakes Counterstrike you will be playing against the world's best, but in poker you will often be playing with the poker equivalent of "newbies".
