The environment now is such that I could probably go make more money someplace else, but to be honest I am *extremely* hesitant to stick my head back out there after getting bitchslapped so badly last time.
I'll agree with this 100% and I believe you're right that a lot of Slashdotters are in this position. In my job the hours seldom go more than 8 per day, the work is stimulating and the pay is mediocre. I also had 2 previous jobs that insisted on a tie and were frequently 10+ hrs/day. It is MIGHTY tempting to see a posting on Monster or Workopolis that I feel qualified for and pays $80-90K, but at the moment my happiness is worth tens of thousands of dollars per year to me.
You're going to love Mothers & Daughters. Particularly the first half, this was the best of his stories IMHO (and I was a huge fan of Church & State). Always love it when I see people have discovered Cerebus. Cheers!
Suse certainly seem to be gaining ground quickly and I think one of the main reasons may be the complete range of products from Suse Personal through to Enterprise
Don't think that Suse won't turn their back on the little guy. In fact the free Suse Personal is no more. This effectively means I likely won't ever have Suse on a desktop or server ever again since I'm not going to buy before I try. Now there's no way to try without paying.

I'm not so sure - Ken Sr. was still a good player in his later years when he was on the same team as Jr. Ken Jr. has been an overpriced gimp for a half-decade already.
What needs to happen is that there needs to be a very basically written message: "Click here to keep people from taking over your computer" rather than the jargon laden crap that is there now.
While I appreciate the idea, this very strategy has been used by the bad guys for some time in order to compromise machines in the form of banner ads with "Click here to speed up your computer!" There are no easy answers to this stuff.
I see from your response that this comment isn't a decent troll which was my first thought.
If the accused wanted to "play" with the worm, he could have just seen what it did on his own network. But by releasing it in the wild, he was knowingly putting something out there to cause others grief. The arson analogies are a bit much but the potato gun one is a good one. Most of us did spend a lot of time with Lego and 500 in 1 kits but we didn't put them to destructive use, nor would (most of us) ever consider it.
I have a few rootkits I have salvaged from compromised Linux systems and they are interesting to analyze but I sure as hell am not going to use it on someone else's machine.
I will agree with this as a Toronto-based observer. I am unaware of any competent grads from my Computer Science year (2000) who have any trouble finding employment.
I had the displeasure of browsing the mountain of resumes that came in from an Intermediate Java Developer job posting my company put on monster.ca and it was ugly. Very ugly.
Sounds like what you're looking for is Mandrake 10.0 PowerPack Edition. The JDK and JRE just work(tm) right out of the box. For some of us, getting work done trumps having an all-GPL distro.
You don't hear from "pro-Microsoft" people, simply because the "anti-MS" people are louder, more 'righteous', and more willing to aubse their essential liberties in order to start a flame war.
This is true. Another important factor the Karma Police (Tux mafia?) can use their mod points for their own agenda. Pro-Microsoft arguments can be modded up if they are well-written and correct, but the bar is set a lot higher than it is for Pro-Linux stuff.
I love Linux as much as the next guy and haven't used Windows in years, but sometimes the dittohead factor makes it feel like Free Republic around here
smbmount (smbclient? smbload? I forget) needs more setuid rights
This has driven me nuts since RH9 and it always seemed to work the way it was supposed to in Debian and Mandrake (IIRC, its smbmount and smbmnt that need suid). Samba just works in ways inconsistent with the documententation when run on FC and I would advise against using it as a file server.
What you're looking for is Mandrake 10.0 Powerpack Edition. It's not free, but includes the very best non-OSS software for Linux, like Sun's JRE, Opera and Flash. This stuff worked with Mozilla out of the box. VERY impressive!

I thank you and the fellow below you for pointing that out. I wasn't aware and stand corrected.

I realize R'ing TFA is not in vogue, but if you did you would have seen that the reviewer uses his MP3 player for audio books.

where do I find the "don't suck" feature?
Found it!
OH SNAPS!!! What an original burn! Taco must be stinging from that one
I did partly RTFA...
Only on Slashdot would somebody claim to PARTLY read a 1-page article to demonstrate the credibility of their comment.

This is what's called knowing just enough to be dangerous.

You didn't miss Tae Kwon Do last year because of the IOC. You missed it because it wasn't an Olympic year!
I don't know but I will chime in to add the colour does kick ass.

No thanks. The money's no good if you can't spend it; I've grown to like the land of the living.

That is incredibly damning and information I knew nothing of until now (and I try to follow GPL violations closely). Thanks for the informative post!
Very detailed, but I don't see "The only bridge out of town" (recall the meteor episode)

The average Joe just wants the computer to work
That's funny, when I tried using joe, I wasn't able to do anything (I couldn't even figure out how to exit the damn thing!)
I am proficient with both Linux variants and Windows. What does that mean?
It means you've never heard of Gentoo or Debian?
