Anybody notice that AT&T now have to have a huge ad campaign that they didn't need before. They no longer have 100% of the market and have to spend considerable effort to hold the market share. Anything less than 100% of the software market is too little for Microsoft for the same reason. This includes OS'es, Apps, Servers, Commerce and connectivity. (WEB/Cable/DSL/Wireless/Entertainment/Comerce/Etc. ) Youbetcha Microsoft is upset! Selling to half of a competitive market is hard and they don't want to go there again. It's easier to be the de-facto standad and sell to all the market. (an more profitable)

OK, time for radio theory. True one wavelength is 4.5 meters. However the most damaging length for a wire is 1/4 wavelength. This is the length the worst standing wave can exist. Cables near 1/8th wavelength are not uncommon and can start to show wavelength related effects.

Before we had COAX, we had twin lead TV Wire. Anybody remember it? Current in one conductor induces current in the other with the oposite direction (magnetic). Away from the pair a short distance there was little power recieved or transmitted off the cable because these oposite fields cancel. This was how the TV signal got from the antenna on the roof down to the TV. It wasn't perfect or 100% sheilded. (Unshielded pair) It worked well until color tv came out and phase shifts of the color signal required better shielding of the lead in. A single wire (non twin lead) IS an antenna and transmits and receives well. They don't have the cheap technology to connect all the signal lines on the hard drive with COAX so twin lead is the next best thing, a-la ATA66. Current in the oposite direction in the ground (induced current) next to the signal wire produces an oposite magnetic field and canceles the rediated signal a short distance from the pair. This greatly reduces crosstalk in the cable. It also provides shielding (true not 100%). The radiation is low enough on unshielded twisted pair to recieve FCC aproval in the USA. This is why CAT 5 cable always uses pairs for all signals. This is why CAT 5 cable does not work if the wrong ground is used in the cable. The ground must be the one twisted with the signal wire. Try it sometime. Make up a 25 foot CAT 5 cable and mix the grounds so the ground from one pair is used in place of another. Even though the wires connect properly end to end, mixing the grounds kills the cable. Don't flame me for calling the - signal a ground. I know it's active in CAT 5 cable, but it is driven oposite the + signal so the E field also cancells out.

Now, to round a ATA66 cable, using this knowledge, simply cut the ribbon in pairs instead of each wire seprately. This will pair each signal with it's complimentry ground.

I can not invite room 523 to my meeting and instantly book it if it is free or proxy view it's schedule to see when it is free to attend the meeting.

Exchange provides 'out of office' functionality for vacation days. Great I'm out of the office, so is the rest of the department. The factory is stopped because nobody is there to cover that step... Outlook still does nothing to prevent all 4 of us from taking the week after Christmas off and stopping the entire factory.

The other software prevented this by only allowing the max number off from any department by having the requirement of taking the non person (vacation slot) with me. If they are unavaliable, I can't take the day off as vacation. That slot was first come-first served. No arguements over who was first. Maybe you should read your documentation before you make such blatantly wrong statements. As far as documentation goes, well as a worker bee, I never see it. That is not passed out.

Our company changed to Outlook. We got hit with the Love Bug Virus. We now have outages every week (scheduled lasting 6 hours) which is a pain for a 24/7 manufacturing shop.

On a related subject, we dropped Russell Calander Manager. Calander Manager imediately showed conflicts in schedules (vs waiting someone reading mail and replying) With Outlook, those checking the calander at the beginning of shift go to cancelled meetings or miss changed or recently scheduled meetings because there wasn't time to sift thru all the stuff in the inbox. With Outlook you have to open any mail that may contain a schedule event to update your calander. Same thing applies for cancelled meetings. I have found out about meetings after the fact. I have attended cancelled meetings. In Russell Calander Manager, some of the users were confrence rooms, vacations and the like. I could schedule a meeting and include the confrence room as an attendee. I could schedule Easter off and include the apropiate vacation slot as an attendee. It works first come first served. No arguements over who was first. Anyone else later would be get a conflict as the confrence room or vacation slot was unavaliable to attend. This made confrence room use a breeze. If you really needed a room, you could e-mail the person who scheduled the room to negotiate and they could re-schedule freeing up the room so it could attend your meeting. (the room auto accepted the first requester). With Outlook sometimes two groups arrive to use the same room. A person has to read all the mail for the room and reply to it later (not real time by someone not working 24/7). Therefore several people can get unconfirmed dates and times for a room. What a mess.

Transistors are still a big factor. To manage power consumption (heat) lower voltages have to be used. This reduces the gate signal which reduces the on current which increases the rise time. There is lots of work still being done on transistor developement. Small gates are required to keep the gate capacitance low, which reduces the channel size which limits the drive current. The small size also makes uniformity of the critical deminsions very difficult. Lower operating voltages makes gate sensitivity critical and dopeing the silicone to work with low voltages increases the leakage current. It is a big balancing act to get it to work. Pushing the limits makes the path to functionality a very narrow tightrope.

The senior project sounds interesting. It sounds similar to Intel's Strata Flash memory. The memory holds 3 charge levels per cell instead of just on/off for higher density. The cell is read by checking the e field of the stored charge. The Strata Flash memory is low power memory and is used in cell phones and such.
