  1. Re:What a load of crap on Techies Rampant on Drugs · · Score: 1

exactly! unfortunately, most people don't understand that 'statistics' can be bent to show almost anything. sensationalist media bothers me.

people who have no knowledge whatsoever regarding drug use tend to make knee-jerk reactions. those reactions tend to be of the kind that say "you're using drugs! you must have a problem! i *must* try to save you!" that's Bad and Wrong. some people with problems use drugs to escape those problems, and that's also Bad and Wrong. but others use them to enjoy life, the same way that some people use alcohol or tobacco or vitamins or exercise or television or [insert favourite way to spend time].

bottom line, most of the people referred to in the article don't want or need to be saved. and most of them probably don't have a 'problem', either. if you personally want to help, do one of two things: mind your own business, or work towards legalizing these drugs, so that the point is moot.

and if companies want to do something, stay out of your employees personal life, and don't expect them to work 80+ hours per week!

  4. Linux/Suck Comparisons on Suck on Linux Evolution · · Score: 1

Funny reading these posts and seeing the direct correlation between Linux and Suck.

ie - Suck/Linux *used* to be good. Now that it's owned by (insert big, ugly, money-hungry corp. here) it's going downhill.

Read the suck article - loved it. The fellow expressed his opinion in true Suck fashion. It was entertaining, and perhaps, informative.

I will continue to use Linux at home, and if possible, at work. I will continue to read Suck if I'm feeling the need for cynicism. The sun will continue to rise in the east, and /.ers will continue to argue until the cows come home.

    Cheers

  5. Re:In all fairness..this is too big a question for on Ask Slashdot: On Good Software Design Processes · · Score: 1

    This is a poor attitude.

Users *do* know what they want - they're just too used to being *told* what they want, and then having to *ask* if they can do something. Computing and software have reached a point where it is almost unreasonable to say "sorry, we can't do that".

ask users what they want. get a clear picture. make sure everyone understands. !!!!Get it in writing!!!! commit only to what's in writing, and then do the work.

and never, ever take the attitude that "i'm the coder, you're the user. i know everything, you know diddly"

  6. Re:Window Maker 1.0 on GNU Window Maker 0.60.0 Released · · Score: 2

I don't think this should be rushed at all. I agree, it's stable as hell, but waiting for 1.0 is not a bad idea.

IMO if more company's would do this (and we could convince people that BetaSoftware != BadSoftware), we probably wouldn't see as many products in the 6.0 - 8.0 range that are still trash.

In an nutshell, a 1.0 should be the realization of the original idea for the software.

I think that the key is knowing what you want and not settling for less.

Yes, sometimes it's not easy, but getting what you want rarely is. :-)

As well, perhaps the better portion of these techies who get bored aren't in it for love, just *money*. Seems to me the people who really have passion rarely get involved w/ something that just 'pays the bills' (or makes 'em loads of green!!) :-)
