  1. naming ideas on Server Naming Conventions? · · Score: 1

I started naming my machines using the theme "foods that begin with the letter Q". Not surprisingly, this list was quickly exhausted, so I modified it to simply be interesting words that begin with the letter Q. Some of my machines are:

    • quiche
    • quesadilla
    • quince
    • quahog
    • quaff
    • quisling
    • quetzal
    • quagmire
for 4000 machines, this is not practical.

At work we _can_ choose any name we want, but we are _supposed_ to make sure the name includes are login ID, so that it's identifyable back to the user (this is for random user's workstations).

For a large data center, I would recommend a combination of (1) name based on function, (2) name based on location and (3) theme-based name based on personality (of the machine or of the namer). I would use (3) as the "real" name, and have both (1) and (2) as CNAMEs.

  2. my experience w/ ebay on When Good Ebay'ers Go Bad · · Score: 1

I've bought several (20-30) items via ebay, mostly in the $10-$25 range. So far, I haven't had any major problems.

There was one auction where after I paid the money, I didn't hear from the seller for quite a while. I contacted the outher buyers (it was a Dutch auction - single seller, multiple identicle items, multiple buyers), and none of them had heard from the seller either. There was nothing we could do at first (ebay makes you wait 30 days before you can file a fraud complaint). After a week or two, the seller contacted me, said he had a family emergency, then sent me two of the item I'd bought, for the price of the one.

Actually the name comes from a bar/restaurant in Canada. There's a ski resort, with two mountains - Whistler and Blackcomb - and Longhorn is the name of the bar in the resort between them.

While this may be good advice for some, I require the ability to connect from a windows machine to my linux box. The only windows SSH clients that I know of (TeraTerm/TTSSH & PuTTY) only support SSH 1. Can anyone recommend good, free (as in beer), SSH clients for windows that support the SSH 2 protocol?

  5. justice, not revenge on More News And Links On Yesterday's Terrorist Attack · · Score: 2, Interesting

In the aftermath of these attacks, a lot of scary things are happening. People are suggesting that we nuke the entire middle-east, or at least go violently destroy anyone even suspected of any involvement. The FBI wants all ISPs to install Carnivore. The govenment wants more illegal wiretapping.

If any of these are as scary to you as they are to me, I encourage you to sign the petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/22462249 5 which calls for "justice, not revenge".

Ben Franklin said: "Those who would sacrifice essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

The text of the petition is copied below:
    ====

In the aftermath of the ruthless attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, we implore the leaders of the United States to ensure that justice be served by protecting the innocent citizens of all nations.

We demand that the President maintain the civil liberties of all U.S. residents, protect the human rights of all people at home and abroad, and guarantee that this attempted attack on the principles and freedoms of the United States will not succeed.

We plead for a thorough investigation of the terrorist events before any retaliation.

We call for PEACE and JUSTICE, not revenge.

  6. Linux costs more on Do We Spend More On Linux Or Windows? · · Score: 2

Let's see, in the last 7 or 8 years (since I started using Linux), I've spent aproximately the following $ on Linux:

    $15 - CDs from CheapBytes
$15 - CDRs for distros that I've burned
$30 - stuffed Tuxes from ThinkGeek

In the same time, I've spent the following on Windows:

    $0 - oh, that's right, I don't use Windows on machines I control.

And every computer I've bought since my very first 8088 has been in pieces & sans OS, so no MS-Tax there.

So that's $60 on Linux and $0 on Windows. So clearly Linux is infinitely more expensive than Windows.

Hmmm...Since Linux costs so much more, perhaps I should consider switching...
