From the article: And for the rare home users who do make major hardware changes, such as swapping out six pieces of hardware or installing a new motherboard, they simply have to call a toll-free number at Microsoft. The technician there will ask about the hardware changes, and then will reactivate the software over the phone, he says.
Since when Did MS start calling semi trained monkeys, technicians??
I've used one of these cameras, They are great fun.
Step 1. take a few stills with it.
Step 2. sit it next to your bluetooth enabled GPRS cell phone, (128Kb/sec each way)
Step 3. pull up yahoo briefcase on its dinky wee screen.
Step 4. upload all my photos 3 times faster then my modem could.
I am really wanting to get one before I do a world tour next year. I'm already taking my Bluetooth/GPRS/GSM phone. And before you tell me that the data rates are ninja expensie, its still cheeper then an internet cafe.
So to all those people that dont see the point of this...... trust me, after you have a play with it you will start dreaming up reasons why you NEEEED one
When they are cheep enough (or someone decides to give a whole stack of cash, um.. i mean sponsorship) I want to make an action movie with these guys. Dress them up, put wigs and flack jackets on them and do all the ninja action movie stuff with them, have them shoot at each other, car chases, jumping onto moving trains etc.
If real actors are already worring about digital actors taking their place (final fantasy etc.) then I just want to give them one more thing to worry about.
remember when 640k was enough for everybody? well i for one am scared by the fact that oneday soon 144pentabyte files will seem small

The interesting thing is that while the movie in preproduction and production the coders have very little (read: 80 hr weeks arent uncomon) time to do anything but make their tools work. and the level of secerecy about the WHOLE PROCESS makes it imposible to leak any of what they have done out.
BUT
And heres the good thing. The people who work in the movie industry are very nomadic. They take one contract for a year or a year and a half then they take a break and work on their own projects. Then when they start to run out of money they grab another movie to work on.
If you want to look at the quality of the tools these people make in their own time while working on their own projects. have a look at the hundreds of free and often open source tools on sites like highend3d there you will find the industry's best minds working on tools for artists, under whatever platform you choose to use, be it NT, linux, irix, macos or osX.
thats what film compositors are for. you spend 2 weeks filming one scene then on one day (when the wether is right) you go out and shoot a days worth of sky's to put in the background later.... simple...
Its NOT random, it must be planned this way because of the 12 other people I have asked, they ALL have gotten the ATI radon ad's. and theres 2 of them.
I've tried reloading but on both pages it will only give me the ATI ad at the top!
I'm sick of fashionable mags that have 15 pages of ads before you even get to the contents page, Those ads surely inpact on my enjoyment of the magazine. At least i won't get back strain from carring arround 15 pages of banner adds on my back.
You know what... none of that works either. Determined people will always find a way to break things. It doesn't matter if it is a house, a car, an alarm system, or an operating system
One thing my dad told me years ago was: "Locks are only there to stop honest people making mistakes" and the same has been proven with computer systems. Even the computer equivilent of a bank safe still isn't enough these days. But that doesn't mean that we should all use the microsoft bank which is just a bucket in the street with a good marketing campain.
the register also has this story on redhat buying beos. And even more interesting, when that rumor came out be's share price jumped more then it did when the news an actual buyer had been found. Thats 49% compared to 40% this time.
Banner adds are great at brand building, people may not click on them but they will LOOK at them. This is exactly what television adds do. These days when you have 10000 companies selling exactly the same product at prety much the same price (be it icecream, cars or airline tickets) any average consumer will just pick the one with the name they like and trust. This involves getting your name out there. Most companies think that banner adds only work if you are showcaseing a particular product or special. why dont we see more Burger King ads, Toyota ads or ads for specific brands of cereal? Basicly because its hard to mesure how effective this is, not much harder then it is for television ads, but then again, television stations have got great marketing people to sell ad space for them. I'd like a real study done (and if there is one can someone PLEASE tell me) on brand building through banner ads (or even those ginormous ads in yahoo now).
the internet is made to route arround troubble, and if this includes every unpatched iis box on the planet then thats ok.
Every internet user has had outages at some point, but this just makes it a outage for everybody at the same time, it might take a day or two to get over the slowdown but no biggie.
i've used a 28.8 modem before and it isn't THAT slow really.

Huge wokflow improvements have been in every version of photoshop and as a user of every single version and sub version since 2.1 I believe there have been very few programs that can go through such major changes every version, yet, on the whole, each one makes you dread going back.
as you quote ps4 the pinicle of perfection, heres a few things that i cant live without that are in the new versions:
- more then one level of undo
- being able to change text after you click 'ok' in the txt dialogue
- being able to see an optimised version of web formats before you click save
- lots more drawing tools
- much more powerfull selection tools
- much better actions and scripting - (/. users seem to like script and code for some reason:)
- vector support
- 'defringe layer' to get rid of ugly halo's from cut out images
- able to open and view and edit and save images many tens of million pixels high (yes, i do it regulally)
- open and save in pdf format.
and lots more things i cant remember cos i just take them for granted.
surea match of saying how oldschool you are is fun but seriously. photoshop is one of those few programs that DOES get better with time.

Shouldn't you direct these questions directly to the company first??
sure the (semi) mass media is a great tool to embarass companies into giving you what you want but its often easier to send them an email or two to someone very high up or someone in marketing who cares what people think of the company.
Sure it'd be great to see a lively debate on slashdot about the ethics behind the cost of bug updates and who should foot the bill. But by naming names and making it personal about CommuniTech it just looks as if all you want is results.
Wheres CommuniTech's right of reply?? i hope to see the otherside of the story.
