  1. Re:That poor joe on What Software Do Cable Installers Place on Your PC? · · Score: 2

I live in New Zealand so your mileage may vary...

When I got hooked up with DSL we were recommended a certain installer (his name was jeff or garry or something), So when we rung up to make an appointment it was a simple case of asking for him... the operator on the other end thought it crazy that anyone would wait a week to get a specific installer (the average was 2 days, yes drool if you want)

So this guy rolls up, notices KDE on the desktop... says that linux is an unsupported operating system etc but he has to check that it works.... so after installing it all And doing a beautiful job with the wireing and installation into the wall, he whips out his notebook and lo and behold... its running linux. He plugs into our connection, runs the router config script he had, then to check, he opens up the slashdot homepage!....

He then closes his notebook, hands us a piece of paper that he had prepared with all the numbers we need, and some handy links about setting up pinholes with the supplied router, then goes on his way....

so the moral of the story???? ask your friends if they had a good experience.... get someone who knows what they are doing

In New Zealand region coding is considered a restraint of trade... couple that with educated consumers and you will find region free players are the norm.

They must be using this patch you talk about because I can skip through all the FBI warnings.

And why do they even put the FBI warning on zone 4 DVD's anyway???.... the FBI has absolutely no jurisdiction in any contries that are zone 4 (New Zealand, Australia, the pacific islands)

pulp fiction is the example I use when trying to explain the evils of pan&slash. You know the scene when Johnny T and mia Wallace are in the cars talking about the shake, they are looking straight at each other.....
on film it is how the director wanted it, both of their faces are on either edge of the screen and theres a huge amount of screen space between them. the whole conversation is one huge shot.... very cinematic, very nice....

On the 4:3 hack and slash version they have the whole scene cut up and they cut back and foward between them as they speak..... totally speads up the pacing ruining the whole scene.

WOW this is the greatest news I have heard all year.... it has totally made my day.

    Ok calm down... explanation time..

I have had retina reatachment surgery 3 times in two years. this is where they take your eyes out, cut open the 6 rows of stiches in each eye and stick the retina back on. They dont know what is causing it (not bungee jumping or a car accident) and everytime it happens my retina gets a little more cut up and i have all sorts of weird stripes through my vision.

Now you my say.. "tough luck, you have bad eyes, live with it" but you see my whole life is based arround my eyes. I am a visual effects artist for the movies (lately 3d modeling on a movie about a ring) my eyes are my livilyhood.

And so the chance that they are one step closer to being able to replace them matters more to me then anything i have heard all year.

So if this is the "limited potential" you are talking about mr katz then i'm not really sorry for getting excited for nothing
