    How is this "insightful"? It doesn't remove the data that they had collected about you before you edited "hosts". It doesn't protect you from the data that Doubleclick has bought. It doesn't protect people who cannot use editors because of disabilities, menthal or physical. It doesn't protect users without root access.

    The logic here by the official raters is that the antenna tower can be easily removed, while the pinnacle is a permanent feature of the Petronas towers.
    Permanent features can also be easily removed if you have enough dynamite.

    How about BIOS support for large IDE devices? Do any of you remember the disappointment when your onboard controller couldn't handle a drive larger than 8 gigs?
    Let's distinguish BIOS and controllers. I have had problems with BIOS many times, not only on the 8 Gb, but also on the 512 Mb boundary. But I have never had any problems with the controllers - the drive works just fine as long as you don't want to boot from it.

    Well, suppose that the motherboard requires SIMMs. It's not $15. Changing the motherboard is pretty much changing the computer.

    I don't think he is going to put something in the kernel that he doesn't have access to the source.
    There are already numerous hex images in the Linux code. Search for the biggest header files - it's all firmware. I doubt that Linus has sources of those files.

    Another question is that Linus will never accept binary-only code when it comes to security.

    I like your logic. You must be a diplomat. My question was: would Saddam comply with GPL? Your answer is:
    1. You probably mean something else.
    2. What you mean is not required by GPL.
    3. The answer is "no" because what you mean (opening the changes) is not what you are asking (compliance).

    Minor correction: what you are proposing would not eliminate the ads (which is good, since some sites would not survieve without them). Instead it would make it harder to plant so called "web bugs", including those that masquerade as ads.

    GPL only regulates distribution of software. Use of software is not regulated by GPL.

    But even if it were regulated, do you think that Saddam would respect the requirements of GPL?

    Million people are not needed for culture. There are many small (<200k) cities in New England with a great cultural and historic potential: think Worcester, MA, Newport, RI, Hartford, CT.

    I'm probably not a "Linux crowd" but let me explain.

    What's wrong? My point was that it's not a part of the XFree86 code, thus the XFree86 team cannot get credit for the improvements made in that driver.

    The release notes don't mention any improvements in the open source part of the mga driver.

    Next time please read the comment before replying to it.

    Matrox G400/G450 users will be delighted to hear that the 3D has been improved. Enjoy.
    Where did you find that? It's impossible to improve something in XFree86 that doesn't exist there. XFree86 does not support 3D on Matrox without a binary-only close-source driver from Matrox, called "mga_hal".

    Now let's look in the release notes:

    The mga driver doesn't attempt to drive the G450 if the "mga_hal" module isn't available.
    Which means - if G450 is detected and the closed-source module "mga_hal" is not found, don't try to use the "mga" driver - it won't work.

    This certainly qualifies as an improvement, especially if the error message if clear enough and mentions where to get "mga_hal".

    But should I really enjoy it?

    Nope. Think "white list based filtering".

    I think it will be easy to persuade the court that your address in not faked even if you don't read e-mail for that address at all, but you can if you want to.

    Open your eyes. "Other internet restrictions" already exist.

    On the other hand, I believe that unsolicited commercial mailings with faked return addresses should be prohibited regardless of the media they are using.
