Yes, Oracle is sometimes deployed with NT, but even people who disdain unix will use sun/hp-ux/whatevernix boxes to run production oracle dbs.

If the client for an app crashes, you can just reboot.

If the server running the database crashes, you have all kinds of questions about what state the data is in. yes, relational databases make sure that you don't get stuck with half of a transaction written, but it can still be tough to figure out what has happened for sessions that were open at the time the database went down.

Users don't like being denied access to their data, either; the greater uptime of industrial strength unix is very desirable for critical stuff like a database.

Is there some rule that says lawyers aren't supposed to take cases in which they agree with their clients? Is it somehow intellectually dishonest?

Many other posters have raised some serious points against mandated open access to the "last mile". We wouldn't be reading these responses and engaging in this discussion right now if Mr. Weightman hadn't been given access to this forum to clearly state his side of the issue.

Everyone notice that Mandrake is working on an O'Reilly book? Exciting stuff. From my perspective as a (gasp) business applications programmer, perl + gtk is one of the things that could really help speed corporate acceptance of Linux. Businesses want their programs rapidly developed, easily changed, and adorned with GUI stuff. My (very limited) experience with C + GTK is that it is good but not quite quick enough (in the coding sense, not the execution sense). Swapping Perl for C should help that out quite a bit. Keep on writing, Mandrake.

This time, it's just a TV show that was pulled off the air for arbitrary corporate reasons. But what if it had been a critically important news story, pulled from the papers for arbitrary corporate reasons?
