Christ, do you blame them? They get a maturing OS, that is widely accepted and supported for free from the best hackers. Why would they want to go forward with an OS many see as outdated and expensive?

I don't mean that as a negative, btw, its just good business sense. Every server I own is IBM (small stuff). Now I have more reason to keep it that way. I am NOT a programmer or kernel hacker, but even I can see the advantages for the switch.

Isn't this an inverted "security thru obscurity" arguement? Saying to default to 40 bit and just dont say anything? I could make 1000 faulty analogies, but will instead say that if EVERY OS shipped that way, then someone would write a program/script to change it over to 128 easily, for free, highly available, just because there was a need for normal people.(create the need, and you create the program)

I don't mind paying for yearly AV updates. Unlike Windoze, they are NOT updating mistakes in their code, they are enhansing what their code does. It's also pretty damn cheap, if you think about it.

Also, I love the fact that you can update even older Norton AV by simply setting your clock back on the PC. THEY know that, and have not worked around it, I assume, on purpose. Keeps good will going, which is one reason I prefer their brand of AV.

Gnome being a serious contender to Windows is not a myth, its a projected potential. As a user of both, I admit windows is somewhat easier to use (both have advantages) but I have faith in Gnome gaining serious ground over the next year to two years. Keep in mind, the look and basic feel of the win9x gui has changed very little since the Chicago days, 94 and before. What will become of Gnome now that ibm and the other big boys are behind it? and what about kde (which i like better than gnome in many ways) How much influence will they have? Will the corporate influence cause Gnome to become unnecessarily bloated and "dummyfied"? And yes, there are very positive things that could happen with the big co.s involved too. Lots of talent. The $64000 question IS: Are we chasing off a 400 pound gorilla (M$) with a 500 pound gorilla?

  11. Re:Feh on Linux Sux Redux: A Rebuttal · · Score: 1

Regarding the bashing of windows vs. linux. You miss the point that most people bash windows not for its security (the issue at hand) but rather for the policies of the company. Remember when Bill Gates said that each person on the internet accessing a server counts as a "seat" for licensing? (granted, that didnt last long) Remember the NTW to NTS patch that demonstrated that the two products were the virtually the same (kernel wise), the only difference was $500 in price, and some "free" web programs? Remember when Windows 95 was going to end GPFs, and then we learned it was only because they renamed them? Most windows bashing is because of company policy, monopolistic practices, false promises and "vaporware", not security. As to the issue, Linux CAN be less secure than NT, if configured incorrectly, just as a new Corvette CAN be slower than a Buick Regal, if you pull 4 spark plug wires off or haul a 6 horse trailer behind it. The real vulnerability is you must have a higher degree of understanding in Linux than NT. The weakest point in any operating environment is more likely to be the person who is installing and managing the network itself.
