  1. Re:Apples and Watermelons. on The ssh vs. OpenSSH Trademark Battle, Next Round · · Score: 1

While I do see your side of the argument - that Tatu is being more than just a little unfair - it doesn't mean that OpenSSH can't change their name, nor does it mean they have to. I simply say that they should change their name to avoid an unnecessary dispute by giving into a relatively minor concession (this would be a completely different story if Tatu told them they couldn't use his standard - then I'd be all for fighting back).

If you still really need to feel like the open source community is making a victory, then just tell everyone that OpenSSH did this to prove they don't need ssh's name to become the more popular version.

  2. What about trademarking other things like this? on The ssh vs. OpenSSH Trademark Battle, Next Round · · Score: 5

I think we can all agree that secure shell is a descriptive name for this program (whether or not it actually is a shell is really a moot point, however), and the logical abbreviation - following standard shell style - is "ssh". Now, to avoid utter confusion, it is a good idea to make sure there aren't other programs called ssh. OpenSSH makes perfect descriptive sense for the program - it's open source, and it's a lot like ssh.

However, on the other side of the table is OpenGL and Mesa3D. Now, MesaGL would more accurately describe what Mesa3D emulates, but GL is a trademark of SGI, and they probably wouldn't like it if it was used without their permission. The best solution would be for the designers of OpenSSH to change their name and avoid any more disputes. This would also give open source developers a more moderate reputation, as opposed to the uncompromising one they seem to have nowadays.

  3. Re:What's wrong with zero sum games? on Slashback: Antennae, Play, Book Larnin' · · Score: 1
There is a great amount of faulty logic in many of these assumptions that things are not zero-sum. This is due to the simple fact that you are not addressing all the variables. The following notation will be used: '+' equals positive, '-' equals negative. Obfuscated, isn't it? However, the number of positives won't necessarily equal the number of negatives due to the fact that I am not including amplitude

    Examples:
    1. Driving to work:
      1. (+) Getting to one's destination
      2. (-) Your driving slows other people's driving
      3. (-) Air pollution generated from motor vehicles
    2. Finding a mate:
      1. (+) Happiness for both parties (though this is sometimes debateable)
      2. (-) Other people will not be able to date/marry/etc your mate
      3. (-) If they do, you will likely no longer have your mate
      4. (-) Competitive fighting may ensue

The problem with the ratings system these days is that it puts the movies into strict categories, based on a number of variables (nudity, violence, language, etc). Now, parents put different priorites on each of these variables. So I propose that, instead of categories like G, PG, and R, the ratings be a series of floating-point values from [0-1], giving the parents a better idea of the actual content.

Even if there are more Linux bugs, one must look at this: There are about 5 distributions of Windows (3.x, 95, 98, NT, 2000). Yet in Linux, there are more distributions (SuSE, Red Hat, Debian, etc, etc). Now, of course, they're all based on the same kernel, but that's not the only factor. The GUIs are different. In SuSE 6.4, there are over 10 GUIs, like KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, etc. Just something to think about.
