  1. Re:Pitiful on Metallica Vs. Harvard · · Score: 1

The best answer to Metallica is to show them the door. They had their time in the spotlight, and they spit in the faces of their fans. So, next time they go on tour, or release an album, ignore it. They're gonna look pretty sad onstage playing to a half-dozen people. And when they don't recover the costs of recording their next CD from album sales, maybe it'll be the last one they put out. I'm not really asking much here...I mean they already suck, and have for quite some time. The only difference is that now we should stop giving them chances. I really think that their popularity in the last few years has been something of an aftermath from when they were good. People kept hoping that they would go back to being the Metallica of old, so they bought each new album faithfully, praying that this time there would be no love songs. And the fans got rooked each time. So, that being said, let's let this sell-out, has-been band hang themselves with this Napster issue. I mean, who exactly do they think will buy the next Metallica "Tribute to American Polka" album? ..... As for Dre, is this guy for real? There are just too many social issues to hit when speaking of Dre, so I'll just keep my opinions to myself, except to say this: Many people are watching you Dre. You owe them something, they made you what you are. Don't help to hold them down. -*Just my nickel*-

  4. Seems easy to me... on Online Voting? · · Score: 1

I would think it'd be relatively easy to set up a system for online voting. I mean, there have been registered absentee ballots for a very long time. Why couldn't we have a registration process whereby each person who applies must prove some minimum criteria (old enough, alive, citizen, not incarcerated, etc.) to be given a uniquely generated electronic key. When they wish to vote, they must have a valid key to do so, with each key expiring after one use. I think that with the advanced algorithms in use in the computer industry today, it should be a fairly simple task to choose one that is uncrackable. That should stop the miscreants.

You know, I'll say one thing for you....you are definitely consistent. Consistently absurd. You are white, yes? Male, yes? Upper-middle class, or even wealthy parents? Perhaps Protestant? I'd guess I'm right about at least 4 of those 5 things. And that is why you cannot grasp the importance of not having your rights taken away from you....because you've never experienced it. I guess I can't dislike you for that, but I do pity you, as it seems you are like so many people in this world who are unable to learn from those who have gone before them. You won't understand just how troubling police abuse is until it has happened to you. When it does, if it does, you will change your opinion rather quickly, I'm sure.

  6. Practical censorship....no such thing on Online Rights And Real World Censorship? · · Score: 1

To censor the content that people can access from this network is to give people a false sense of what the internet is. In a sense, you are giving them your version of the Internet, at least as far as what you think people in your community should and should not see. Fact is, porn is part of the Internet. It's a part of life, as is all the other "undesirable" content out there. So, I think the answer is to censor none of it, rather, discourage unwanted Internet activity at your site by allowing access for specific reasons only. For example, if you wanted the students to figure out a complex engineering problem, give them access to the net for limited periods of time to accomplish that. Can you guarantee that they will not look at other sites? Nope. But, neither can you stop them from hearing about sex on the school bus or in the school hallways, nor from looking at someone's father's Playboy. However, if you were to give them unrestricted access to the machines, along with no agenda, then you are asking for trouble. I'm not saying that I think kids should be allowed to view pornography, just that they should be aware that it exists on the net. Make a rule that anyone caught with this type of content on the machine will lose Internet privelidges for a specified period of time. I think the kids would rather have some access on the "honor system" than no access. After all, everyone knows that porn on the net is strictly for the workplace, and has no legitimate place in our schools... :)

What about Win98 vs. WinNT? Or Win2000 Professional vs. Win2000 (unprofessional?).....? Fact is, even if you were right (which you are not), I hardly think that offering a multi-use OS that needs rebooting every few hours can be considered "winning" against an OS which offers yes, several different flavors, but above all else, stability and reliability. The only thing you can rely on in a Windows environment is unplanned downtime...and maybe some windows-only viruses.
