I actually know intuitively about this. I would come from a background that one could label poor. And even the relative inexpensive nature of technology can be a problem.
Shall I call you Mr. Coward? ok Well your point is basically true the same is true about a state of "anarchy" in that a leader will eventually emerge on some level and order will be restored. Sure you want to be in that better group I do too. What is definately unethical and to some extent immoral is how we think of people. It almost makes me weep to think that some people want a permanent underclass of people to knock around on a daily basis. But remember it can and WILL catch up with anyone who does.
Consider the French Revolution and related topics. People got revenge en mass on the upper class since they were so disadvantaged. The person who sells you shoes or scrubs the public toilet may at one point in time make the decisions about wheather you get a job later in life or not, etc. Basically it's just the golden rule.
As for porn basically I see it as something that should be permitted due to free speech concerns if people start limiting my speech for unpopularity eventually my speech may be considered obscene. Basically it lets people get a foot in the door.
Generally the price for computers is still not down to what it should I feel that it has probably reached the upper-middle class and middle class range however lower-middle to poor is another matter.
Well where I come from the libraries mainly suck. For example I am searching for something on Brain Cancer and I found 2 count them 2 books in the library both of which are totally useless discussing about pediatric tumors and some tear jerker stories of little children getting these things: very little of substance. This report is due Wednesday and I have little to go on. Although the pickings are slim and I have little to go on the internet has helped some.
If anyone can assist me with some useful links from the web (or other sources) that I can get (fairly detailed) info about barin cancer and tumors in the brain I would be most grateful.
Please explain how he is insane? I think he is just a person who has political views that are good for a person who is in debate circles (Lincoln-Dogulas). As I was instructed in debate you are to never, never, never, agree to anything that the opponent says even if they say that objects fall down due to the force of gravity otherwise they will pick you apart completely.
Could someone please explain why people have a grudge against Mr. Katz? Is the style of writing too logical? I find that I would give my eyeteeth if I could paint a picture of something logical enough that people all over the world would actually read it (several thousand). What he has to say are points that most people don't really care about. If I ever actually get an ip to my machine there will be some pretty cool things pretty soon howver I have inferior communications hardware and do not have the easy access to cash to remedy this. Basically most people take for granted things that they have without taking a look at the other half. I am reminded of a book called "How the Other Half Lives" published at about early 1900's where the conditions of the people were displayed in graphic deteail so that people could understand it is nice to see a person address such a topic. What I would just wish is that communication rates could be the same for anything like my 2400bps AT compatable modem so that I could connect instead of having to have to deal with people complaining about their OC3 not having enough bandwidth. Some people wouldn't have enouth even if they owned their own telephone company.
No I am not saying that math is all useless just extremely difficult to understand (how many nice glossy textbooks have you seen on hyperdementional geometery). And I am not saying that computers are useless (they do some rather interesting things) it is that people in areas of pure math (where most of cs started) do not really think about how to apply this knowledge to anything really useful to most. That really bites. It wasn't until the math requirement went down that a person could really do anything in cs without a Phd.
Yeah but that opens up a real problem with most people namely that you have to go through them to get any info. Who says that anyone will do anything? Is it against the law if they don't? Can they be held for similar charges in assisting with libel?
The only use that could have would be to exploit microsoft apps and related data or to garner info from cookies in some way. This has no real effect on me.
Basically I think that everything that is currently done with distributed computing is a waste of time in one way or another due to the lack of a way to generically impliment distributed computing solutions for something interesting like perhaps an ai system, the human genome project, etc. Basically most of computer science was (and still is) linked to the a verry large ammount of mathmetical knowledge at it's core. How many math problems are considered pointless? Most of them. How many of these projects are pointless due to the same methods? Most. Not to say that cracking cyphers and finding out about intelligent life are not interesting but most of the time I think that people can do better. The future of space travel to the level that Star Trek has would be most likely in the 10,987th century and not the 24th at the rate that we progress. I really don't think that the Vulcans will contact us.
Linus is not in anything just for the money at all. However he *does* have responsibilities that require money (wife and children to support, pay his own bills, etc). He has in no way given the kernel sources to god ol' BG and company or sold anyone out. I think it's admirable that he has been able to get a job for himself to allow him to be able to keep developing Linux.
It is just a symptom of people being lazy. Basically if the source compiles with gcc then you should have the chance to get one for your processor. If I had something other than a x86 pc I could help. Problem is that most machines that are not x86 usually cost more and are harder to find. However this is not always true.
It's really not the machine it's just that the game gets hot. I think it's all the massive ammount of higher end rendering that it does for quake II rather than just the fact that it does something. I ceternally hope it dosn't have problems.
I understand that most things need more hardware. What would really rock is a game with really cool ai code, complex structure (something similar to a mud interface), and interesting levels of operation. Just make it a text interface or something with ascii rendering. I would buy it or at least have it as an option when running the game to reduce the overhead.
That would be interesting the forced spread of violent games. Seems like a conspiracy theory to me. Yeah money is important. Most games are also really cheap. If cost if an object you can get most games on console machines for about the same cost as the PC versions and the start up costs are much less (ie $200 US)
Thanks for the summary (albiet brief) I have no real experience with some of these games. I have played the new Quake II for N64. How close is this to the PC version any improvements? One bad thing though when I run the game it gets overheated extremely quickly and the graphics start to fluctate kind of a bummer.
Well I would at least look at the Amiga after the way you described it. Never actually looked at it I have mainly been aquainted with the ibm-pc class machines however I am always willing to try something new.

Slashdot has become a standard porthole to information and as such that information can be used for good/evil.
Now not to sound too much like Archie Bunker but why are white people as a demographic not achieving as high a tech level as Asians?
And I just discombobulated an AC!!

Question to pose. How does one use any form of authenticaion or signing like pgp from a web based email service? That leaves people like me screwed.

I get screwed with that when I have my 486 and the sys requirements say that you need a Pentium VIII or something.

There might be a solution to this just make a front end to aalib. Theoretically make the game extremely fast am I right?
Yeah that kind of really sucks. By the time I actually get out of college and get a job I will be too busy to play any game even if I can buy it.
In the words of the immortal Homer Simpson: Doh!
Have you tried to see if the file that is referred to is even there. Sometimes the simplest things are usually the problem.
