  1. OO (probably) is the future. on The Object Oriented Hype · · Score: 1

in university at the moment, we're taught a lot about oo programming and design. in fact - this subject come's up more than any other.
it's becoming a trend, to not only to develop your programms using oo design - but more and more new languages claim to use it too.
in my opinion, the benefits of using (code reuse, easy maintenance) it will eventually make it the standard design of all programming languages in the coming years.

  2. What we need... on Linux Gaming: Looking Back And Looking Forward · · Score: 1

im my opinion, linux needs the following things to help the situation regarding gaming on linux.
    1. A big bucks company (VA or redhat) to get some cash behined SDL/Mesa. If SDL get's some commercial companies using it to produce cross playform games natively, there would be a load of interest from other companies currently using Direct X.
    2. Nvidia and other companies to ease the licensing on their drivers, so that they can be modified and redistributed (in binary form) by various distributions, like Redhat. this way, hardware 3d rendering works out of the box.
    3. finaly, some support from the users. i've pre-ordered deux ex, and already have a couple of loki games. id software weren't impressed with the Q3A sales, and thats what we need to change.

just stop the services that you dont need, and take all the unwanted stuff out of your kernel. my debian system boots to gdm in about 25 secs.

it's projects like this that provide a reason for having virtual frame buffers's in the kernel in the first place.
okay - it doesn't alter the usefulness of the kernel, but it *does* provide the perception of friendliness. if you can't see the confusing messages, you don't get confused - simple.
this is something i had wondered about a couple of years ago when i started using linux. in my opinion - it's pretty cool.

    a similar project is aurora.

As well as having a good, mature gaming library, the X-Box will also have one of the best graphics processors ever designed.
    which means we'll get alpha-blended bsod's ;)

  6. Monolithic kernel design on Linux 2.4.0-prerelease is Released · · Score: 1

now that linux's target has become desktop use (the addition of USB, and supporting more and more home-based devices indicates this), is the monolithic kernel design still the way to go?
i know the microkernel design has it's flaws, but surely it has more potential in terms of ease of use, and maintainability? to a new user, having to rebuild the kernel when you buy a new device would seem difficult (although it's not, but it sounds daunting at first).
just how much work would it take to re-design the current code, and port the modules?

NB:I'm not trying to have a go at linux/unix here, just my thoughts.

either give them updated versions of the hardware that they code for now (as and when it's available) or completly differnent stuff. This way, the coders think that they're getting something for nothing off of a cool manufacturer - but they'll have to keep the drivers maintained so that they're functional with the new hardware.
    everyone benefits.

Not really a "me too" effort, as Nautilus has had it's code written specifically to embed Gecko - Konq. didn't. It used KParts to do the embedding and that's all.

I agree! A couple of months ago, I was convinced that KDE was being left behined gnome - which isn't good (although I'm an E man, myself :).
But now - Kde is becoming attractive, even to an E user. Alpha blending, anti-aliasing, mature component architecture....very nice indeed.

Looks like the gnome team are gonna have to do a bit of work on bonobo to catch up with this.
Well done KDE developers! (i may even install KDE2.1 when it appears...).

Exactly my point - critism, and how it can't posibly be true! I wasn't saying OSX is the best, I was saying it's better. /. readers (obviously jealous) find this hard to accept, and dont like it. I wonder, if Linux was the OS with high quality anti-aliasing and alpha blending, and it was OSX with XFree, would people switch to Macs? No! Because X is crap, and you know it.

http://www.kaleidoscope.net/ *sigh* It seems strange to me that when /. readers hear something positive about Linux, they're full of joy and self-congratulations. Yet, when there's the slightest hint of critisism, they sulk and ball - because it cant posibly be true! Afterall, how can Linux be flawed?!?! Over the last couple of days, I've read a LOT of comments about how X needs AA etc - Mac's have had this for years. Face it - OSX is what people want Linux to be (as far as desktop usage is concerned) so give it, and it's users, some frigging credit! OSX is what Linux could be if people would open their eyes to the truth. We need to get rid of X, and bad elitist attitudes!
