  1. RMS offers a dissenting view on x. AKA Monday. on Richard Stallman's Dissenting View of Steve Jobs · · Score: 1

I'm not Jobs' defender, but it seems to me that, as a society, we seem to want our heroes to be perfect (or at least to conform to our ideas of "right"-ness), and a lot of contention about legacy revolves around discussion of whether these folks "deserve" to be lauded. There was a book last year that implied that Ghandi was a homosexual. Which, of course, caused a real outcry in India, but to my point: who cares? Mr. Jobs had a child that he allegedly denied for many years; as a family man, that offends me much more than his complicity in the Foxconn suicides. Now there I am, projecting my values on him; but as far as I can tell, he wasn't required to follow my guidelines for living. Can we agree that those of us who use computers or portable music players or smartphones, or those of us who take our kids to see CG movies have been influenced by his work? I personally think I would have hated working for him, but I used products from his company every day.

  2. On this subject... on Are 'Monster' Cables Worth It? · · Score: 5, Informative

I was recently shopping for a DVI cable for my HDTV, and was blown away by the US$80 AND UP prices I was finding around town. 80 bucks for a bloody 1 meter cable!?!? Thankfully, someone pointed me to http://www.pacificcable.com/ and I found a 1 meter DVI-I Dual Link for $22. (I am not affiliated, just a satisfied customer)
The Monster-type cables are the profit center for the A/V stores. They have to compete for pricing on the actual gear, where they may get less than 10% markup from their cost. On cables and accessories, they can get up to 40% or more. There is no way that one cable is better than the other, provided the connectors make good contact at the jack. Don't waste your money.

If you are so concerned about the potential bandwidth impact from such a posting that you omit a link to the site in question from your post, also remember to use an email account in your slashdot user profile that is in a different domain than the site you don't want slashdotted. Not being malicious, but we are a curious (and clever) bunch...

  6. I did a similar thing... on Leave a Safe IT Job for Music Tour? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just before the bust; I went to a performing arts center (with an inexperienced management staff) as "Master Sound Engineer" and by the time my patience ran out, my old CO was under a hiring freeze. Just the same, I think you should do it (but please send pictues and mix tapes). Seriously, do it. You know IT jobs can still be found; the market is in recovery (albeit slowly), but dream jobs only come by once in a while... Best of luck!

  7. League Bowling on Ways to Beat the Telecommuting Blues? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I can't recomment it enough. In a handicap league, you can be a terrible bowler and still be competitive. And, who knows, you might be good, or at least get better. I started in February and my (2 person) team won the summer season. Money and friendship, that'll keep your spirits up. Not to mention beer, if you are so inclined.

  8. Hello? A to D converter? on Professional-Grade Audio Recording With A PDA · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is not an all-in-one solution. You'll still need an encoder, and frankly, a portable DAT or MD recorder is: smaller; a single finished piece; designed specifically for this purpose; and (at least in the case of the MD recorder) much cheaper than a iPaq/A-D converter/this funky card.

  9. Sad part is... on Instant Concert CDs? · · Score: 2, Informative

Most bootleg tapes, made from one point stereo mics or quasi-binaural mics mounted in eyeglasses, would sound better than a tape from the mixer. The mix would be for the live show, and would sound weird on tape, without the acoustic sounds from the room. I doubt very seriously that CC is going to pony up for a snake split and a second mixer to make an actual "live mix" that would sound like something worth $15. Board tapes are only good for the band to listen to afterward to see where they screwed up/did something cool. If they are gonna just set up a stereo mic pair somewhere in the house and feed it directly into a two-track recorder, they _are_ bootlegging the concert, just like any other Deadhead.

  10. Re:Just because Sprint calls it 3G... on Vote for 2002's "Best" Vaporware · · Score: 0

Actually, Sprint's "Vision" services are 3G. Other domestic carriers are using "2.5" GSM-based systems. I get high speed access through it as a modem on my iBook. We aren't (yet) getting the full bandwidth (some deployment hangups), but we probably aren't watching movies because there are no movie players for the #*@!ing phones...
