Ethics? He didn't claim to lie or cheat to aquire this loan, he qualified for it and will have to pay it back, it's not free money. I think he is smart to take what he can get even it is only to use as a safety net. Every financial planner I know of recomends that everyone should have an emergency fund that could cover 3-6 months living expense, is a student exempt from this approach? I personally had to take a half year off school because I didn't qualify for enough of a student loan to carry me though my third year (makes me wish I had applied for a loan and invested it during my first and second year - just in case.)
As far as investments go I know that in Canada we have some funds that are effectively saving accounts (your principle is protected) that pay as much as 4.5%. If you decide to invest using funds be sure you understand what an MER and load are and how they can impact your returns.
These kids today with their "features" and "technology". I remember when I was young our video cards supported two colors and we liked it that way. None of this sissy optical stuff for our mouses either, they had balls! I wish I could say the same about all of these kids today with their icons and IDEs, it would do them some good to type a command or two or do some punch card programming...
It looks like I'm the only Slashdot user that likes tablets. I used to have a laptop that I used primarily at work and then I got a tablet. It changed the way I use my computer. I don't carry a notebook around work anymore. I read e-books now. I sit on the couch and surf the web. i may not be paperless but it's a big step in the right direction. By the way I'm using the Toshiba Portege M200 and my only complaint is the touchpad, I hate touchpads. i considered the smaller HP (can't remember model number but it didn't have a full size keyboard, trust me, you want a full size keyboard. Oh, one other complaint - The cd burner/dvd is external.
UNIX has endured and Linux garnered so much attention not just for what they are but what they are not. I recall a time not to long ago when Windows 3.1 was considered blot ware and GUIs while providing a shallow learning curve did so at the expense of power and stability.
My question is this: What's changed?
Why do people insist on trying to turn Linux and UNIX into the very beast they complain about?
With a command line shell or even a lite windows manager Linux and UNIX are stable, powerful operating systems that are best of breed and untouchable by their competition. As GUI based desktop OSes they are as awkward, clunky, bloated and unstable as any of their competition - more so in some cases.
I hear time and time again how Linux GUI based desktops are 3-5 years behind their Windows counter parts - Well guess what - By the time they catch up Windows will have evolved and left the Linux and Unix communities another 3-5 years behind.
I will continue to use Linux and Unix to serve web pages, as a development platform and as a mail and file server, but when I want to surf the net, play a game, create a quick document or most importantly keep users happy and productive with a minimum amount of support Windows is the way to go.
Come on... Windows... Lindows... I bet Windows is pronounced Lindows in a couple of European countries for god sakes.
Why is everyone so quick to blame MS? All they did was ask for the list, it was the Lindows guys that handed it over without a fight. If MS handed over a list of hotmail users to another company even under order of the court everyone would be up in arms.
The Lindows guys are also going so far as to ask people to do their legal leg work by finding other products with Windows in the name. If MS did that everyone would laugh in their face.
Lindows is a commercial product, they are charging $100 a pop. Michael Robertson may not be as rich as Bill Gates but it doesn't make him any less greedy or any more ethical just a lesser business man.
What the hell are u talking about? If you are referring to the British tax dollars that go towards BBC?s programming get a life. I assume that since you read slashdot you support the open source movement... Ok wait a sec I think I get it now... If you get something for ?free? (open source doesn?t cost anyone anything right? No time or resources are involved it just appears.) that?s great. But if someone uses up.25 cent of the bandwidth YOUR tax dollars paid for you?re up in arms.
Consider this Einstein:
The BCC is selling copies of this broadcast and as a result of their Internet broadcast they have effectively increased the size of their market from Britain to the world. Pretty good way to invest YOUR tax dollars if you ask me.
Also consider this:
Maybe, just maybe, a wonderful organization like the BBC appreciates that cultural programming such as the LOTF broadcast can and should be appreciated be an audience as large as as economicly feesable. Isn?t that the whole purpose of the BBC?
I could go on and on but to be honest with u I think you just wouldn?t get it anyway.
P.S. I?m not an American so is it ok if I tune in?

Welcome to the unregulated world of voip. You're going to have to take the bad with the good.
Did you every stop to think that non-delivery could be the result of an issue at the senders end? Just a thought but they are in beta.

Instead of wasting your time with a bunch of techie's opinions go see a lawyer and get an expert opinion - This is a legal issue after all.
