  1. Re:Modulator or AUX input on Five FM iPod Transmitters Reviewed · · Score: 2, Informative

The modulator goes in the antenna lead between the antenna and the radio. When the modulator is powered on it cuts off the antenna signal and introduces your signal into the radio on a set frequency.

So it's still going the FM route only it's cutting off all other incoming signals.

OMG..they have a branded starup sound! Can we have a startup sound too! Please!

"A spiritual side of the branding experience. A short, brief, positive confirmation that your machine is now concious and ready to react."

Spiritual side? WTF does that mean? Do we get Kool-aid if we format the drive?

"The startup sound is designed to help you calibrate or fix something that got out of wack when you startup your machine. Let's say you muted your machine, and you don't hear your startup sound, you know you aren't ready to listen to stuff."

Maybe the power LED being off, the dial at 0 or the red 'no' symbol on the speaker icon might give it away after you hear absoulutely nothing coming from the speakers?

Of course there are the foot pedal mouse and coffee holder ROM drive crowd to think about. Maybe they can get an offical Vista helemt with a send in postcard.

"The Xbox has a hard-wired startup sound. "

Which makes sense. Your siting down to game and the sound system has a mojor role in that experience. It also happens as soon as the machine starts. You know exactly when it's going to happen. It's basically a "hey..it's this loud right now..get your volume set..we're getting ready to game". Not blast you out if you forget where your settings were the previous time and you walked away during boot up.

People get paid to "think" this crap up. It's amazing.

Are you allowed to work on or modify the house before it's completed? It seems most home builders will not allow you to work on the home during the construction. This is for insurance/liability reasons and others. I don't know if this only applies to only building/trim type stuff.

Have you checked with your home builder yet?

Actually one of the better things I've heard recently. Taking you to a URL with a swipe. Not only that but taking you to a directly to a page within a site.

I don't know how many people (read non-geeks) that have been suprised by the fact that you can type in the location bar in a browser. Seriously. We take it for granted, but there are people out there that can barely use their computer let alone figure out they can type in there.

The first time I saw this someone was using a search engine to go to known url.
"Why don't you just type it in?"
    "I did"
"No, in the location bar..up there"
    "You can do that?"

Scary thought, but yeah, there's TONS of people out there like that :) Like other posts, long as they aren't using some program to track you it's a cool idea.

Good idea for the local paper or a magazine where they could have barcodes along with a story and it take you to more information on the web. I'm sure there are people out there that would enjoy that.

Could be scary too. I can imagine the scanner-spam already. Just a bar-code with nothing by it. :)

This is not a gift to the Linux community, but instead a way for AOL to line their pockets with more money and get more control. Do I think it's a good idea? No. Why?

Do we really need they're junk running on a Linux box? Clueless Fred's next headline will be "AOLinux sux".

How many people are actually going to use it?

Do you really want your next toy that hooks to the net running AOL and with no other choice? Don't think so. I built my Linux machines to have a choice..not give it away to some corporation that makes the decisions of what is best for me..including a manditory use of their service. I'd like to stay as far away as possible from that one.

If you use it for traveling, that's your choice..but if this is your daily means of getting on the net..you need to get a clue.

  10. Re:Doesn't compare on Emus And Do-It-Yourself Arcade Construction · · Score: 1
The article mentions the pc2jamma deal.

If we stick to using the emulators on a PC (keyboard, monitor, mouse or joystick), which was the main subject of the article, you can only press so many buttons on a keyboard at once. Even with a joystick hooked up try playing multi-joystick or trackball game.

With the cabinet/hardware setup they are using, you have to choose what type of games you are going to play on your setup, horz or vert. You are also tied into having one control setup for everything you play.

My idea of enjoying a game isn't swapping out control panels or twisting displays around.

The main reason for my saying they don't compare was "Horz and Vert monitors, control layout, joysticks, buttons and cabinet looks have a lot to do with the overall experience of playing a game."

I think it's a cool deal and will probally throw one together some time, but I would still feel the same way.

There's just something about playing the real deal that makes it an experience more than just a game.

  11. Doesn't compare on Emus And Do-It-Yourself Arcade Construction · · Score: 4
Emulating a video arcade game is nothing like the real deal. I own several full size uprights (Galaga, Robotron, and Joust to name a few)

Playing the game on a PC and standing in front of the real deal are 2 totally different things. Horz and Vert monitors, control layout, joysticks, buttons and cabinet looks have a lot to do with the overall experience of playing a game.

If you want to see some old school games or take a trip down memory lane, then yeah, the emulators are cool. But for the overall experience they fall short.

Try playing a game like Robotron emulated..lame. Now try standing in front the real deal and playing...takes your nerves and sends them through a blender...big difference.

They have their place. Long as it's not taking up floor space for the real deal.
