  1. Microsoft Mindshare encompasses NYTimes on Microsoft News Update · · Score: 1

Did anyone else notice that in the Times article there is no mention of the fact that the agreement with the Justice Department has not been approved by the courts. I would think that the Times would have a knowledgeable writer on the issue, but they seem to have just parroted the MS press release. Since Microsoft thinks they have a finalized agreement, that must be true, right? Who cares what the states think, or for that matter what the judges think?

  2. Palladium on House OKs Life Sentences For Hackers · · Score: 1

If you want to see all systems secure, you must submit to the industry lobbyists and make laws requiring Palladium. Then, as Microsoft says, everything will be secure, as only things Microsoft likes will make it onto the internet. Then it could be illegal to not run Palladium, or some compatible system, banning open source, hackers, and weak-security infrastructure all at the same time. A victory for all sides, right?

  3. Donald Duck would get Disney to go after you on MS Passport and... Visa · · Score: 1

Donald Duck is trademarked for an infinite period of time thanks to our copyright laws, so no one can ever use the identity Donald Duck. Donald Duck is probably one of the few "people" who has no worry about his identity being stolen out of the Passport database for he has a whole army of Disney lawyers to protect him. His name is probably also protected via Microsoft's DRM software, and it will probably prevent me from even typing this in.

  4. Percentages Wrong on Best Billing Options for a Contract Position? · · Score: 1

The percentages are wrong in the first place. Corp to corp may save some taxes at some points, but has a generic fixed cost of about $1000. So, you probably get 80-85% minus $1000 a year with some hassle and work. Independent contractor still has to pay normal rates beyond social security once you get into the bracket. Social security is just paid at twice the rate. Regular employees are only different in that they get taxes deducted in the paycheck. If they end up in a lower tax bracket than the company thought, they get the money at the end of the year. Tax-wise, ind. contractor and employee should be similar as long as you can read the fine print and know salaries before and after taxes (if the paycheck says $30/hr, it's more for an employee because the ind contractor has to pay taxes later), but independence and benefits make for a trade-off.

  5. Re:patent is not for all tabs on Adobe Sues Over Tabbed Widgets · · Score: 2

Has anyone used Visual Studio by Microsoft? You can do the exact same thing--drag boxes into others to add a tab to the existing box. For some reason, however, I doubt Adobe wants to sue Microsoft.
