As I said, I've never done anything illegal with a child, mainly because I know the consequences for both the child and for myself if caught.

So you've never done it because of the fear of getting caught, not because it is immoral or improper, or because an underage child isn't mentally capable of understanding the nuiances of the situation? Hmmm. I would have hoped that the fear of getting caught wasn't your primary motivator. The fact that it is says something about you.

Do you really think the single largest communications medium would remain non-ad (for the most part) for long?

Newspaper, radio, and television all fell to the persuasion of phat checks from advertising companies; it was inevitable that the 'net would also.

But consider this: it may be that soon we will have broadband access for free; paid for by the advertisements.

Obviously the RIAA has those rights, why wouldn't Microsoft? We're talking about some of the largest businesses (or collection of businesses) in America.

This is an outrage simply because the email sent out seems to imply that I am endorsing this product to folks in my address book. Since I am a computer professional, it will seem like I have reviewed this product for my business' consumption and am suggestion it.

Imagine a copy of it going out to my boss who thinks I actually wrote it! My opinion counts to my fellow employees and employers. I wouldn't want it tainted with the suggestion of this product.

Granted I probably wouldn't use MSN Explorer if I were a good computer professional, but still!

  7. Re:BellSouth DSL on On the Reliability of DSL Providers... · · Score: 1
For about a year I've been running cable service from Time-Warner. While the speeds are incredible (48KB/s upstream, and around 200KB/s downstream) the packet-loss was unacceptable for playing Netable games (Tribes!). During the hours of 5pm-10pm, there was ALWAYS around a 15-30% packet loss. Enough to halt a web browser for a few seconds (which would continue fine) and definately enough to prevent all game playing.

I then ordered ADSL from BellSouth. I decided to go that route because I use my Cable connection for VPN'ing up to work (I telecommute) and have heard of various cable companies not allowing VPNing anymore as it was a "Business Application" (I suppose they were blocking GRE packets). BellSouth had a deal of +$5 for a "business" ADSL connection (guaranteed connectivity and better customer service). While talking to a sales rep, I asked about GRE and stuff like that and was told "We don't support any protocols other than standard TCP/IP stuff". I got it anyway (Tribes!).

I was surprised to learn that ADSL in my area uses PPPoE. Which was depressing, but I installed the software anyway. While looking over the CDROM, I was THRILLED to see 2.2.x kernel compiled drivers for PPPoE. Which worked exactly as expected. Even more happily, I learned that the ADSL connection WILL pass any and all protocols, even ones I made up (a P-t-P linux net module I wrote that uses (protocol #56 if I remember correctly)).

The short of the long is that I now have both connections routed through my gw linux box. Works like a charm. My desktop box (Win2K) runs PPPoE (ADSL) for most connections, but uses a proxy server (squid) on my linux box for web access across the cable modems (for speed's sake: w/ ADSL I get 25KB/s upstream and 100KB/s downstream). My webserver and mailserver uses the cable's IP address.

The combination is expensive but since I'm getting my place of business to pay for the ADSL (since it's used solely by my desktop).

The moral? I dunno. Just FYI.
