Well I thought these guys were pretty assertive for Brits and were standing up for what they thought was right... Rather similar to 1776 I think.
So its OK to fight about taxation as in the American Revolution but not fight for your right to a way of life that bought you status, pride and money.
These weavers who were the 'Luddites' were skilled workers who were well paid by the standards of the time and had prospered due to the initial stages of the industrial revolution ie: the rise of the spinning machines such as the Spinning Jenny
They were protesting at what they saw as the the deskilling of their work by the combination of the factory and mechanised weaving.
I would say that their position was rather similar to Developers today faced with the.NET concept coming out of Microsoft. Micosoft's aim is to deskill developers and force them into the Micosoft 'factory' system.
Yeah, I live in the UK which matches all of your tech worker society problems:
1) Caste ridden ie: the class system
2) Against strivers
3) Socialist - Labour Government
4) Doesn't appreciate tech workers - governemnt introduces IR35 and taxes the shit out of IT contractors
However I am not packing my bags to move to the USA.
Why?
1) H1B visa too restrictive and open to exploitation.
2) For my line of work in Financial Services pay is actually better than USA.
3) Find all this Silicon Valley go-getting hype very dull.
4) Can't get a decent cup of tea there
5) No cricket
6) Hate sunny weather
7) Can't pop over to Amsterdam or any other cool Euro city for a quick weekend
I think the reason why politics is pretty meaningless at the moment in terms of content is that this is an era of peace and prosperity similar to the 1920's.
If you examine the politics of the 1920 ie: Warren Harding term then it too has a pretty low content of meaningful political debate. No big diferences in positions of the Republican's and Democrats, a lot of corruption and zero ideology.
I think with the fall of communism and the undermining of socialism as a creed, there is no one really challenging the USA consensus domestically or internationally.
Perhaps if oil remains at its current high level and/or China starts kicking off then we will return to old style "life and death" politics. Hopefully we don't.

Yeah well Hollywood peddles this escapist crap for Yanks who believe all problems have solutions which normally involving shooting a lot of people.
Whereas I think the European way in films is more intelligent and truthful. I think not eveything in life is simple enough to have an obvious solution. And guns are not the answer for virtually anything.
Still why be challenged when you're sitting on your fat ass in a multiplex stuffing your face with latest GM modified junk food.
I have only read Stand On Zanzibar by John Brunner but I think it is one of the classics of SF up there with Dune, Foundation and Ring World.
The question is whether there was any other organizations using this b4 Amazon if it was so completely obvious?
If there was why did they either not patent it themselves or contest the patent application.
If there wasn't then I feel that it is no more absurd than many of the other software patents creaking throughthe system.
What's the situation in EU as I believe you can't patent such software types of inventions currently. Can I base my site in the EU and not pay Amazon if I use "1 click".
I think patent law needs reform urgently but its not exactly a rallying cry for politicos. If it was reformed, I think it would be hijacked by the special interest which f*cked up the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
Well, American TV and films is designed for people with little grasp of proper English (like US citizens for example) and most of it is dubbed into their native tongues anyway.
Anyway you all must have small pricks with your 'big' aircraft carriers and ICBMs. Notice though that Americans aren't so good at actually fighting man to man cf: Somalia, Vietnam, Grenada, etc...
The American English translation of this is a sale of counterfeit or stolen goods from out of a car's trunk in a car park.
Next you'll be wanting translations of petrol instad of gasoline, colour instead of color and through instead of thru.
USAnians, remember English comes from England not the USA so our version is the correct one in all cases. US English is merely a colonial dialect and very distorted one at that.
A lot of peopler have very confused feelings about corporations.
There was a protest march in London earlier on this year by the UK equivalents of the Seattle protestors. My friend went along and cheered on the destruction of a branch of McDonalds although he did not take part himself.
But most days during the week he buys a McDonald's breakfast!!!
When I broached him on this apparant hypocrisy, he said he hated McDonalds but they did a very good breakfast and he hadn't time to seek out alternatives...
This piece of crap article is obviously here for trolling purposes so that it gets shot down in flames.
My impression is normally that he tries to write something sensible but fails. But now he's just taking the piss.
I mean its just stretching stupid analogies to breaking point. Next he'll be writing on how Snakes and Ladders is metaphor for the Open Source movement versus Microsoft.

Where's this car boot sale? Just a hint will do!
You are obviously in the UK which is where I am. Have they any other software which has fallen off the back of the lorry.
The local car boot sale where I live only has useless stuff like Window 3.1 for Dummies books , IBM PS/2s from the early 90s and old Amigas.

Give up the crack, Jon.
