  1. Re:Does anyone like Motif? on O'Reilly Motif Books On-Line and Free · · Score: 1

To be fair, this could be that the programmer knew Motif better than the GTK. Motif has been around a while, and many programmers have more experience with it.

Here is a link that I thought was interesting, written by the guy who updated the 6b volume on what he thinks the adavantages over QT and GTK are.

I think his point about legacy code and the fact the Motif is on every UNIX is dead on. You may not like Motif, but odds are your employer might.

Seriously, If you know your way around Linux (command line), you will have no problems with FreeBSD. I personaly prefer FreeBSD to Linux, mostly because "make world" is just plain fun to run. You synch to the current CVS tree, and away you go. Like most BSD based systems, Kernel configuration is done via a text file, which I prefer to the Linux way. I like that too.

The only big disadvantage I know of is lack of Accelerated Graphics for Nvidia chipsets, but others like Voodoo chips are supported. I ran Unreal Tournement (for Linux) in Linux emulation mode with one a few years back. I think the Nvidia support is being worked on, but in the meantime, 3d games are out. Almost everything else is the same. Gnome, KDE, gimp, samba, blah blah blah are avail, and can be compiled from source via the ports collection and installed. All in all, a good system. I like it.

  4. Finding time for class only offered during the Day on Fast Track to a CS Degree? · · Score: 1

My problem is that I *want* to get a degree, and finished all the general ed for it. However, the required upper level classes for the degree are only offered at times when I have to be at work to pay for Food, clothing, shelter. I asked the dept chair about this and he said-
"Well, we only want serious students."
I am 35 and except for a few classes here and there, have a 4.0 gpa. I did this mostly while *having* to work full time. I thought I *was* a serious student, but guess not, because I have to work for a living.
It's easy for Universities to scream about the importance of degrees, but it seems what they really want to do is sell class time to parents of 18-22 year olds rather than us older, returning students. Anyway, rant off. By the way, this was University of Colorado.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I think the majority of Americans that go to College want to get the B.A./B.S and get out, whereas other countries seem to value the importance of knowledge over "getting that degree to put on my Resume to get that REAL job I want."

Although I thought that the BSDI merger was okay, I'm not so sure about this latest merger is a good thing for FreeBSD. That said, it's important to remember that *all* walnut creek was doing was distribution for FreeBSD, like Infomagic does for the Linux distributions. BSDI and now Wind River are just the company pressing the official CD, and running the ftp servers. If things don't go well, I suspect the FreeBSD team will go shop around for a company more reponsive to the goals of the FreeBSD development team. Like Linux, no company *owns* FreeBSD. It's a community driven software project like the Linux Kernel (although different licensing of course.) Anyway time will tell.
