For the same reason some manufactures one-uped their competiors with volume controls from 0 to 11.
> Could this give me the high quality audio I'm looking for?
If you're looking for hi-fi (id est true to the source) sound reproduction, than no, it can't. High quality audio can not be reproduced in electrically noisy environments such as those found inside a PC case. If high quality audio were desired, one would remove all analog sound components from the computer. Obviously this would require using an external amp. (Have you ever considered why even plasitc cases have metal on the inside? Does the term "EMI shield" ring a bell?)
It could be that you are looking for the "warm" sound delivered by tube amps. In this case a circuit could be designed to reproduce this [...] soft clipping.
If my memory serves me correctly, when MS decided that they wanted to get into the online-service market, they tried to by AOL. Is there anything new under the sun?
It seems that everyone everyone wants to know HTML; let them learn it right with the following book: HTML: The Definitive Guide. I'm really surprosed I haven't seen this mentioned by anyone yet. This is one of the few books I've encountered that is fully understandable to a novice and is also very useful to the expert. Gives an historical background...; platform independent...; my hightest recommanation for the need. You'll need at least two!
Does anyone know who controls area codes, the closest thing I can think of to TLDs? Also, who controls the telephone system's country codes? Are these agreed-upon standards (if so, who allocates new codes), did the government step in (then what about country codes), or is there some benevolent organization which dictates these things?
Prehaps we can learn something from the past . . .

It can therefore be concluded that this is a "great gimmick to sell to idiots."
The opening lines of the latest GNU GPL:
This thing is over a decade old, and is still standing strong. You should have a very strong reason for changing even one character.
