  4. Re:Diebold spins it. on Diebold ATMs hit by Nachi Worm · · Score: 5, Interesting

Most Diebold ATM's run OS/2. But there's a push from some banks for them to install windows on them, even though the banks don't manage them. I used to work for a company that had ATM's with Diebold, and the engineer I talked to was unhappy that they were putting windows on them, but it's customer demand. It's simply some jackass that works for a bank and thinking they should run windows, when he has no idea how an ATM even works.

As far as VPN's go, for the most part, the ATM's either dial up, or are connected to a LAN that has some sort of WAN connection back to its respective bank. I don't know of any that use VPN's, although it is entirely possible. Keep in mind that Diebold simply provides the machines and fixes them when they break, it's up to the bank or whoever to provide the connectivity and other supporting servers/equipment.

  6. doesn't mean anything on Apple's iTunes DRM Cracked? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Just because it's cracked doesn't mean a damn thing. Think about it, all of those songs are already available on P2P networks and newsgroups already. Most of them with superior bitrates.

Just because someone else puts up an AAC of the file on P2P doesn't mean that it's going to cause people to download more illegally. If someone was going to steal the music, they'd just do it with MP3 or OGG, or whatever flavor is already out there.

Think about it, this really does nothing to hurt Apple's business model. The percentage of people that are going to somehow benefit from a ripped AAC file and decide not to buy it from Apple instead is so low that it's insignificant.

What this does mean though, is that I can now play my purchased music on my Linux workstation, and possibly get a portable player that's not an iPod that will play these. I'd say QTFairUse is an excellent name for it, because that's certainly what I'm going to use it for.

Plus, why would one buy music from Apple, only to give it away to total strangers for nothing. I wouldn't. They way I see it, I paid for it, and if you want it, go buy your own.

  7. censored music on Wal-Mart to Launch Online Music Store · · Score: 3, Interesting

With all the talk of censored music at Walmart, it might help to understand a bit about the company. They are based in Bentonville, GA. A hellhole of a place, quite a ways from a major city. Everyone in the town works for Walmart. As far as I know, everything there is owned by walmart. Gas stations, food, and even (surpise) walmart itself. Bentonville is in a dry county. That means that it's illegal to serve, sell, or buy booze in the county. People there apparently have a real problem with alcohol, think it's the devil. A friend of a friend took a consulting job there about a year ago. She was in another county at a bar and someone that worked with her saw her drinking a beer. She was fired the following monday.

At my previous job, I had to deal with walmart as a client. They are a bunch of Nazis. They are huge, and many companies depend on them to survive, and walmart knows it. That's why they can get away with doing almost anything they want. 70% of all companies that do business with walmart either go bankrupt or get purchased by walmart.

  14. someone go to court! on RIAA Threatens More Music-Lovers · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why doesn't someone just go to court? When I was in college, I had literally nothing they could take from me except for a waterbed and a shitty 486. No way in hell I would have settled. I would have looked for some kind of free representation, or failing that, just represent myself. Even if I lost it would cost them money, and say I had 100 songs they were suing over at $150k each, that's $15 million. How in the world is a broke college student going to pay a $15 million dollar fine? Surely everyone would see it as ludricrous that downloading 100 songs would incur a $15 million dollar fine.

Fucking RIAA. Looks like they've figured out that bullying people under the threat of litigation is a lucrative way of doing business. Reminds me of SCO and those companies that exist solely to buy patents and then try to sue the pants off of people. Isn't there some sort of law against using the threat of expensive litigation to get people to just give you some sort of money? I know settling out of court is legal and all, but it just seems like this is blackmail.

  15. ProactiveNet on Server Monitoring Solutions? · · Score: 1

I know you're looking for something free, but others here with some dollars to spend might like this. ProactiveNet does standard monitoring of network devices, can grab any variable available via snmp, microsoft perfmon counters, or even using shell scripts to parse data and return values you wish to monitor. It also has very extensive monitoring capabilities for just about any kind of database (it can execute any query you wish or monitor performance tables), and many kinds of middleware.

It keeps a database which keeps track of the normal values throughout the day and sets high and low thresholds. So, if you have a problem, it can use this data to try to pin down where your problem actually lies. It's actually works quite well, well enough that I just bought it. I evaluated several different products, including the standard HP and CA stuff, but the ProactiveNet stuff kicked the crap out of these in features, price, performance, and usability.

I don't get why more people don't do this. You get more efficient use of your resources by not wasting dual PIII servers for just a single task that really only requires the equivalent power of a palm pilot, you get redundancy, and you have your coolness factor all rolled into one package.
