  1. fucking patents on Smallpox Vaccine Could Prevent AIDS · · Score: 1

The article mentions that the university filed patents on using the vaccine to fight HIV. That's just simply fucking wrong. Yeah, it's all fine and dandy that they figured this out, but if it ends up restricting the availability of the vaccine to the world because they want to be greedy bastards, I hope the rest of the world will give them the finger and just use the vaccine anyway.

It's like Brazil giving US drug companies the finger a couple of years ago when they decided to produce their own HIV drugs. A lot of people cheered them on because they desperately needed it. It's just plain extortion if people are dying, and someone holds back the cure/relief in order to get money out of them.

  2. Re:I use a similar service already on Snail Mail As E-Mail · · Score: 1

I've been with Paytrust for about 4 years now, all I can say is they rock. I haven't had a late bill since and because of them, my credit rating has gotten quite good. Previously, my bills would get lost in stacks of mail and I would forget about them.

You can pay things like mortgages and car payments through them that don't get regular bills and have a payment booklet instead. All of the credit card junk mail gets discarded, and things you really need get forwarded to your real address (insurance cards, etc).

I haven't even *seen* a paper bill in the 4 years I've been with them. They will even take care of sending address change forms to your billers for you. They store the addresses of all billers that others use in a database, so you can just search for the one you need instead of typing it in (you can still type it in if it's not in there). Obviously other people subscribe to Playboy, since that address was already in there when I went to make my payment.

Paytrust is by far one of the most useful sites on the net.

A currently popular artist with lots of connections needs to come out with something like. Steal bands away from the major labels to create credibility.

Allow anyone to send in their music in the correct format, and post it. Have user ratings so if it sucks, it gets modded down. It could even have a "people who liked this band also liked this one" section just like Amazon.com or the iTunes music store. That would actually be a little better than having ratings since someone who hates country is obviously going to skew ratings by modding all country music down.

  6. raw ethernet? on HyperSCSI Examined · · Score: 2, Insightful

If it is truly raw ethernet, this means that you cannot route it. On most current networks, you probably wouldn't want to because of latency issues, but, on networks with 1 gig or 10 gig links, latency should not be a problem. So, if it does use raw ethernet, this is actually a limitation of it, not a benefit.

Travelling at speeds exceeding 100MPH off the track would be punishable by permanent license revocation and seizing the car. Perhaps there would be a special key that would enable full performance

Yeah, while we're at it, we should put exploding collars on everyone's neck and blow them up if they get out of line. Maybe we should also let the government decide what is acceptable to look at on the internet.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You don't think that most people have some common sense? You punish the lawbreakers after they decide to do a crime, not before. Policing your citizens in such a manner is pure Gestapo.

Welding visors have had this for years. Kind of interesting it's only being used now in helmets.

The welding visors ran about $200 to $300 last I checked. When the glass is as dark as it needs to be to protect you, it's impossible to see through it to see what you're doing. Traditional visors require the user to leave it open, get ready the strike a spark, and then put the visor down right before. It's a pain in the ass, and if you're welding all day long, you're bound to accidentally strike a spark before the visor is down, leaving nice little trails on your eyes for awhile. With this, the initial spark is detected by a light sensor, and it auto darkens the glass. Much more convenient, especially when you need both of your hands to hold something in place before you start welding it.

I've always wanted something like this for the side windows in my car, and a nice little slider to adjust how dark they get. Alas, no one seems to make film I can apply. :(

Would it be possible to build a community CA? One where people sign up to receive a certificate, and then trusted members of the CA vote on whether or not to grant it. You could use the site to establish a huge web of trust. If someone started abusing their cert by sending spam, people could file complaints with the site and the trusted members could revoke their cert. It wouldn't even have to be a website type community, it could be a p2p app to eliminate hosting costs, and it would run continuously on one's mailserver. This way, it would receive notifications of revoked certificates immediately.

This solution obviously would not be perfect, but, it would definitely make it harder for the spammers to stay ahead of the game like they are now.
