Aside from learning one of the foundations of our language I'm not sure why you pick this of all things to be upset about. I never learned Latin and I speak the english real good.
If Taco is that pissed off about doing Slashdot these days then why doesn't he step down so he can go run his multi-billion dollar charity organization?
This discussion is about free software versus Microsoft software, and it's fairly well-established that Microsoft software has a much higher TCO than best-of-breed free software.
I know there are probably quite a few studies out there that you can point me to that prove this (or claim to) but of course I could go out and find some that "prove" the exact opposite. Yeah, granted, we know who pays for a lot of the studies that claim MS has lower TCO. I tend to think your claim is right but the problem is that there are people with an agenda on both sides and that always makes it hard to sort out. Well, it's never hard if you've already made up your mind, of course.
When you consider how much money Microsoft drains from various countries' economies...
How much? Is that much money really being spent on software compared to the money needed for other issues? Even if the number is so big why would so much money be spent on software? In that case it sounds like there is a more fundamental issue of screwed-up priorities. And in the end people do have choices, even if MS is quite influential and willing to resort to scummy tactics.
If you don't care about these distinctions, don't be a computer scientist.
That's good, because I'm not a computer scientist, I'm a real engineer.
Please don't take that too seriously; as I'm sure you've seen us EEs love to kid CS people and vice versa.:)
My reason for making the point is that I think that asking questions like "is the web is really the web anymore" is irrelevant by virtue of the fact that what we refer to as "the web" has evolved beyond the original model. We've made progress, we've seen advances, and will continue to do so. What we call it isn't very important.
FTFA, this is the message GMail/Google Mail users are now getting in Germany:
"We can't provide service under the Gmail name in Germany; we're called Google Mail here instead. If you're traveling in Germany, you can access your mail at http://mail.google.com./ Oh, and we'd like to link the URL above, but we're not allowed to do that either. Bummer."
Users are then forced to copy and paste the URL into their browsers to access their Gmail account.
People will have to copy and paste... Oh no, those poor users!
The name "gmail" was already taken for an e-mail provider. Except for hard-core Google fanboys (and girls), this really seems like a pretty open-and-shut case.
For a case like Firefox, where there are other companies using "Firefox" in their name... I don't think there's any chance of bicycles and scooters being confused with a web browser. But an e-mail service and... An e-mail service, well, there might be room for some confusion there.
Google has a shitload of money. Does anyone really think they'd back down on this if they didn't have to?
Big gigantic company doesn't get its way every single time. Boo hoo. I think Google will survive.
the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking, and callous behavior of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism
Depending on what's being downloaded from you, you'd better keep those logs encrypted unless you want to be *helping* their case for "making available.":)
Sure it cost his shareholders billions, sure he's going to lose his job and be sued into oblivion for gross mismanagement... When you say he "did the right thing" I'm not sure that phrase means what you think it means. Costing shareholders (whom a public company is beholden to) billions and "gross mismanagement" don't exactly sound like the right thing. I don't know either way if the buyout would have been good or bad for Yahoo (who really does?), but the way you put it really doesn't help their case for turning down the offer.
But the important thing is that he stood up to Bill Gates, stuck out his tongue, and yelled "I DON'T LIKE YOU!" Ah ok, so "doing the right thing" means "acting like a three year old."
He was just pissed that they failed to provide him with his requisite sunglasses for outdoor and indoor use. That guy's a rock star, you know?
Seriously, though, I wonder how series like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive will look without Itagaki at the helm. Can DOA: Extreme Barbie Doll Dressup really be the same without his genius guidance?
Then again I wasn't too impressed with all the focus on making the girls' breasts all bouncy -- it just ended up looking really weird. And there were never enough cute shoes!
a 33 year old bug, plus a 25 year old bug (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/05/11/1339228)....
if we keep going backwards, will the world implode?
Well since time began only 38.5 years ago we should find out the answer very soon!
Kids don't learn Latin anymore

Maybe if you stopped sucking your own cock every now and then, you'd have a better self-image.
Guys who can suck their own cock don't need better self-image.
You know what thought just occurred to me? What if RMS is really just another twitter sockpuppet?
Citations badly needed.

missin teh point
C'mon, don't ruin things by being pedantic. This is why people like you (and me) are only able to deal in imaginary quantities.
Well for some of us being able to get hands-on experience is definitely theoretical at this point.

Does this really matter at all? For anything?
Complex porn? You mean like porn with things like sqrt(-boobs)?

Spending too much time on IRC has taught me that you girls are out there somewhere but once we find you you're actually all lonely 40-year-old men ;)
Some people are simply no fun when you are trying to make an anal sex double entendre.

None of that has anything to do with looks.
Sure. Just as soon as Slashdot gets some chicks.

Jack Thompson (maybe more of a mini-boss... like it'd be that hard to beat this guy)
Jack McCoy (now we're talking)
No, someone forced me to check my sense of humor at the door today...
