The Slate article is apologetic bullshit. A large and modern aircraft crashed due to gross incompetence of the pilots, killing 2 people. How the hell is that not an "air disaster".
Let's nip this storyline in the bud.
Yeah, we wouldn't want a company to have bad PR, and we wouldn't want to hurt some culture's feelings. it is better to fly unsafe planes and kill passengers.
Whatever happened on final approach into SFO, I highly doubt that it was anything related to the culture of Korean air safety in 2013.
Oh, oh, "you doubt", well that certainly takes precedence over flight recorder evidence.
Do all the people replying here not realize that Gandhi_2 was joking? Let me spell it out. Gandhi_2 is making fun of our western tendency to be so hyper-sensitive to cultural issues that mentioning, or even noticing, that someone is from another culture or genetic group is likely to elicit a charge of racism from someone. The fact that that many people didn't even get it shows how accustomed we have become to hearing these charges.
I think you and G2 are striking to the core of the issue in such a way that people just simply can't understand. Maybe it is being culturally insensitive, but sometimes cultures are wrong.
Some cultures place deference to elders above the safety of others. They are wrong. Some cultures practice persecution of all minority or non-state religions. They are wrong. Some cultures are anti-homosexual and racist. They are wrong. Some cultures perform Honor Killings on family members that shame the family. They are wrong. Some cultures mutilate girl's genitals in order to... make them... uhh, I am not sure why, but they do it. They are wrong.
Is it insensitive that i hold these beliefs? Maybe. But they are the ones that are wrong on these topics.
My theory is that Tim realized that people will give him money for making stupid videos and promises (that at least are backed up by his reputation as a great game maker, unlike a lot of other KS campaigns), and therefore he almost has to try to see how much money he can get before making the game. It is a giant snowball effect. The more money he gets, the bigger and better game he can promise, which means he needs more money, so more video shenanigans and dancing around trying to get people to give him yet more money.
My prediction is that when the game is finally released the early backers and fans will hail it as the greatest game ever that changed the face of the gaming world... no matter what the game is actually like.
I am fully prepared to be flamed and modded down by doublefine backers.
just because I made a great movie/game/story last time doesn't mean I will do so next time
Tim Schaffer isn't exactly a one hit wonder. He has a proven track record of producing great games. I don't know what his track record is for delivering on time and under budget, but he does know how to consistently make quality games.
But what is his track record with being handed a giant sack of money before any code is laid down? What says he wont just flee with the sack?
I recently received two identical hand written notes from the same car dealership obviously written by the same person, but with two different names signed on it. Both were begging me to trade in my car to them for a new one. (apparently my car has very good bluebook value for its age due to it no longer being produced)
The recruiters were there to offer jobs to people, not to answer for every controversy involving the agency. It isn't their job, and it isn't especially reasonable. Do you harass sales clerks about sweat shop labor used to manufacture some particular good in their store? This isn't much different.
No, but I sure as hell ask a recruiter or better yet a manager about things like their offshoring policy during an interview. They can either tell the truth or say "I dont know". If I don't hear the answer I like, I let them know why I am turning down their offer.
That being said, "I dont know" had better be followed up by "But I will find out and let you know right away." A few have decided it was not worth it to call me back as they knew what my response would be.
There is ZERO chance I'm going to use a browser which doesn't allow me to default JS to being disabled. NoScript is also FAR advanced beyond other similar tools, so it would REALLY SUCK to have to use Chromium's lame equivalent, but I will if it is the only choice. At least in other respects Chromium is pretty good.
In what ways is NoScript more advanced than ScriptSafe?
But because the infrastructure is so crappy, they gain more on the interested on the deposits than it costs to provide the service; the extra fees are just gravy and people are forced to bend over and take it. If they provided good security, or got my god damned money that was stolen back, or at least pretended to care about investigating my claim, I would be fine with the fees. (Yes, I am bitter about it.)
Well, it does actually cost the banks *something* to securely and reliably process transactions, so if they don't charge for that then they are cross-subsidising, which some people object to even more.
I like 'free' banking in the UK, long may it continue, but the money to run my account is almost certainly NOT being covered by interest my bank earns on the contents of my current ("checking") account, so somebody else is likely subsidising me, quite likely someone poorer than me that keeps being stung with debit interest or account misuse charges which are therefore higher than they might otherwise be...

Except, of course, there is no security at all in the US checking system. Anyone can take the bank account number and routing number of any account and forge a fake check. The name on the check does not even need to match the name on the account, banks do not bother verifying that the check is valid before paying it out. The only time they even ask for an ID is if you are at your own bank, if you cash a check at a merchant, there is no security at all.
So the banks are charging us a fee for... well nothing, they provide no services or security. They do not care about your few thousand dollars, it is peanuts to them.
Why should I stop going to movies because you are an inconsiderate asshole? (I am assuming you are defending the practice of using a phone during a movie. I apologise if this is not what you intended.)
Actually, thanks to Amazon's "one-click" patent, competitors are now forced to be no less than two clicks away or they're going to get a cease-and-desist from Amazon.
That isnt monopoly abuse, that is just patent trolling. Either way it is still bulslhit, though.
I suppose the publisher-cartel justification for this is that the physical cost of printing is extremely low compared to the overall costs of bringing a book to market.
So if this is the case, then I'm sure the publishes wouldn't mind at all, if I traded in my bulky, heavy dead-wood books for e-reader equivalents...
(But then who am I kidding??)
Of course they wouldn't mind, they get to charge you twice!

Its Oracle not Sun now.

Well if you give your key to a company to print out as many copies as they like.. you might as well not lock your doors.

Lot better. it is now far faster than Chrome. I have switched back.
It can still leak memory and be fast. (well, right up to the point where the computer runs out of memory)
People always say Java is the next Cobol. I program in Java, so I guess I already joined the next COBOL gen?
And it is your duty as a Java programmer to prevent this prophecy from becoming true. Even if it means destroying Java when it's time comes.
"Make it possible for programmers to write in English and you will find the programmers cannot write in English."
I am sure Data can chime in on this.
Is there something named Firefox that isn't a browser but uses the same silly exponentially increasing versioning scheme?
