  1. Re: disagree, but Mod Parent Up on Help Shape the Future of Slashdot · · Score: 2

Actually I have a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way to help the bias problem.

Add an actual moderation option "-1 disagree". Have this only lower the post for the moderator himself, and secretly subtract karma from the moderator. Eventually disagreers will no longer be able to moderate. Problem solved.

And to elaborate... bias isn't a problem with the moderation system, it is a problem with human nature. A way to filter that out would be helpful, but I am not sure how.

  2. Re: disagree, but Mod Parent Up on Help Shape the Future of Slashdot · · Score: 1

I bet moderators mod you down. Which is sad and is an abuse of the moderation system. Keep reminding people... -1 != disagree... if you disagree post!

Anyhow, here is my post... Even with the moderator abuse, I don't think changing the system is the right plan. A more complex moderation system isnt really the answer. I like the system here because it is simple and fairly fair.

Perhaps a more complex meta-moderation system would help, though it isn't immune from the bias problems.

Anyhow, to sum up my post... I disagree, but Mod Parent Up(tm).

I thought that such transponders used a passive-backscatter technology like RFID, not requiring batteries?

I think the issue is that RFID doesnt work at the range these devices need to operate it. EZPass has high-speed lanes in PA where you go through the device as full highway speeds. The detectors are a good 20 feet away from a small car. Also I have heard they use older technology which isn't standard RFID.

Most non-high-speed gates have a light that tells you if the device read in correctly or not.

However putting a camera in it? WTF man, WTF.

Google was the tiny upstart company that slew the giants. But this was back before search was a multibillion dollar industry. Do we forget how they made the first true search engine obsolete in a matter of months. Before Altavista search engines were fairly primitive. Altavista had the backing of Digital which was once a computing giant, and for its time an insane amount of bandwidth and computing power. Yahoo started using Altavista at some point, and eventually bought it up. Now altavista.com points at Yahoo and digital.com points at HP. The venerable altavista.digital.com doesn't even return anymore.

A lot of companies won't accept gmail? I find this very hard to believe, unless a company really doesn't want to stay in business. I remember back in the day when sites stopped accepting yahoo and hotmail addresses, but in today's web I am willing to bet more people have a webmail account than a isp-provided email. With as much as people jump services, or services get acquired and rebranded, most people cant afford to have their email address locked to their provider. And since google seems to be a fairly stable entity, I would expect most people to use it rather than a more transient service.

If you mean that companies will get wise to their own name showing up in someone's address. Simple. Just make it yourname-1234@gmail.com. Keep a lookup table of 1234=spammer company #1. Yeah its a bit of extra work, but presumably you would be auto-forwarding the email on to your proper account anyhow, so you only need to look when you get spammed from an unknown entity.

As far as companies not accepting valid email addresses. Well that is just a clbuttic example of a bad regular expression.
