    It is ok if a government official sells state secrets, or gives preferential treatment to industry for money. This is the reason why they get high power government jobs n the first place. Look at the FCC, for instance. Their chairman is directly owned by industry. It is only plebs like Snowden that get prosecuted.

    Hospitals are required to submit data to health departments for public health reasons. This data is sent by requirement of law.

    Sending it to a marketing third party is a big no-no due to HIPPA

    Your examples only apply to people being paid hourly. Work until the job is done, you get paid until the job is done. People on salary really should get the fuck up and leave when the time is up. How is it my problem if the company is too cheap to hire enough workers to get the job done in the time allotted?

    Many salary have things like on call and emergency times that they do not get paid for. In return their salary is compensated, bonuses paid, or other amenities to keep the employee happy. If the company does not compensate properly... the employees walk... usually to their competitors.

    In your scenario, the company is rewarded for squeezing their employees and having them stick around "until the job is done", since the get free labor.

    Think about the amenities people lacked back in your 1950's golden years. Now some people might say that the pre-technology era was indeed better, and I wont argue that they don't have a point... But most of those people would not be willing to give up their computer, modern car, modern home, modern television.

    Shit, you are complaining you want to go back to the 50's on THE INTERNET. A thing that just would not happen without our modern economy.

    I think you are not aware of how amazingly vast most of the United States are. Unless you live in a major city, you are going to need to move to go to a university.

    I get 10 unpaid compulsory holidays a year. If I do come in to work on those days, I don't get paid any extra.

    And you will be told you have to come in on those days because the company isn't doing well, and not put it on your timesheet in order to not get your boss in trouble. Failure to comply will show up in your next raise... if you are lucky enough to be employed by then.

    I have not read this book, but my argument was more around "The best practices for perl are not necessarily good programming practices." But to be fair I have never worked with anyone that actually wrote good perl. I have never been able to read something someone else wrote, and only barely able to read perl that I wrote.

    You couldn't tell by the inability to support unicode or roll out changes that do not ruin the site? (not that these are perl's fault per-se, but more that slashcode is an impossible pile of spaghetti to untangle)

    While I do not particularly care for perl... shit programmers will write shit code in whatever language they are given. It isnt the language's fault they are shit programemrs. (though languages like perl are more than happy to give programmers as much rope as they would like)

    My real problem with perl is that the fucking camel advocates bad programming style and hard to write code. I think snippets like yours come about because first time programmers read the camel and instantly became bad programmers. Larry effectively made people worship doing "neat tricks" as a style. It isn't the language, its the culture of lazy coding that the language grew out of.

    Groovy, Python, and friends could have become the same pile, but at least they have examples and books that are written with style.

    After pooling some of the bikers in my family, it seems older ones are saying it, but I don't think they actually dumb enough believe it makes them safer. I think they are just using this is an excuse to have loud bikes and make sure they are not banned.
